Jacket edges a bit rubbed with 1/2 inch closed tear and associated crease along top edge. 1964 Hard Cover. xi, 332 pp. "Killer in the Rain collects together eight classic short stories by Raymond Chandler. It was in the pulp detective magazines of the 1930s that Raymond Chandler's definitive take on the hard-boiled detective story first appeared. Here then, from the well-thumbed pages of 'Black Mask' and 'Dime Detective Magazine', are eight of his finest stories including 'The Man Who Liked Dogs', 'The Lady in the Lake' and 'Bay City Blues'. Sharper than a hoodlum's switchblade, more exciting than an unexpected red-head and stronger than a double shot of whisky, they are packed full of the punchy poetry and laconic wit that makes Chandler the undisputed master of his genre." Contents: Introduction; Killer in the Rain; The Man Who Liked Dogs; The Curtain; Try the Girl; Mandarin's Jade; Bay City Blues; The Lady in the Lake; No Crime in the Mountains.

Condition: Fine

Description: A Fine copy Near Fine dust jacket. Jacket with very slight wear at the extremities, retaining the original price of $5.50. This collection of Raymond Chandler short stories from the 30s and early 40s, many from the famed Black Mask magazine, was released after his death. In fact, Chandler did not want the collection published during his lifetime because he had re-used many elements of these stories in his longer novels. In addition to the titular story, the collection includes tales such as The Man Who Liked Dogs, parts of which were featured in Farewell, My Lovely, and The Curtain, which was re-purposed in The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. "Raymond Chandler's pulp novelettes [stand high above the rest of the season], to some extent cannibalized in his novels but still important in their own right" (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
