Description: Square 8vo, pp [2], 87, [1], frontispiece, pictorial title page and 13 plates on tinted backgrounds by the author, all hand coloured, finely bound in contemporary half tan calf, spine richly gilt with raised bands and black label, a fine copy throughout, FIRST EDITION, fifth in the series of Christmas Books that Thackeray so delighted his public with, now rather unfairly languishing in the shadow of Dickens. Poor reviews of this title led Thackeray to give up the series in 1850, and only The Rose and the Ring would follow. The Kickleburys was issued in both coloured and uncoloured [tinted] form, this a splendid copy of the coloured version in excellent binding of the period.
