Lagerspuren. - Englisch. - Kenneth Elton "Ken" Kesey (* 17. September 1935 in La Junta, Colorado; † 10. . Laurence Gonzales, Ken Kesey. ---- This is, of course, a chaotic volume, and cynics will easily dispose of it as a transparent attempt to capitalize on twice-published material, plus stuff lying at the bottom of the drawer. Or maybe it is just Kesey offering his broad back for his friends, some alive and some dead, to ride on into the public eye. Whatever the intention, you can't help feeling you are reading a history, and maybe it is better to have it poured over your head like this than smoothed out, rationalized, and tied with a bow. For if there was a revolution in the fifties and sixties it surely was not programmed and thought through, and the writers who voiced its spirit were chasing a vision and not an ideology. Best to leave criticism to the critics, who will have to notice pages of mawkishness, self-conscious letter-writing you might call it, that sprawled cockiness of American Romance. I would rather say what I think it is all telling me. Besides, I have to admit that it finally does achieve a certain dignity and courage, and these may count for more in the end than its weaknesses. . "Kesey's Garage Sale is a collection of essays, some republished and unpublished writings and thoughts mostly by Mr. Kesey. Features the play "Over the Border" about the adventures of a number of Merry Prankster type freaks in and around Mexico, forever getting in and out of broken down cars, on buses, eluding the fuzz and smoking dope, (which is based on the time Kesey spend hiding out in Mexico from drug charges in the U. S). This encyclopedia sized volume is a collection of Kesey memorabilia, mainly from the Whole Earth Catalog era, with reprints of articles, a long rambling interview between Kesey and a younger writer, letters to and from other '60's divinities - Neal Cassady, Paul Krassner, and Allen Ginsberg. There are various shorter pieces by Kesey, plus an intermittent running commentary by Arthur Miller. Illustrated by cartoonist and Merry Prankster Paul Foster. This is a A-Z mishmash of all kinds of odd thoughts and written ramblings, some are funny, some are just written thoughts." EB; 20 X 20 X 20 inches; 238 pages

The first printing of the wrappered edition, published simultaneously with the hardbound version by The Viking Press in 1973. Introduction by Arthur Miller. As the title suggests, the book collects a grabbag of oddments feauturing Kesey, Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, Paul Krassner, Laurence Gonzales, Ron Bevirt, Whole Earth, Shirley Abicar, Kathi Wagner, Ken Babbs. Ken Elton Kesey (September 17, 1935 - November 10, 2001) was an American novelist, essayist and countercultural figure. He considered himself a link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s. He began writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1960 after completing a graduate fellowship in creative writing at Stanford University; the novel was an immediate commercial and critical success when published two years later. During this period, Kesey participated in government studies involving hallucinogenic drugs (including mescaline and LSD) to supplement his income. He settled in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, where he maintained a secluded, family-oriented lifestyle for the rest of his life. In addition to teaching at the University of Oregon, he continued to regularly contribute fiction and reportage to such publications as Esquire, Rolling Stone, Oui, Running, and The Whole Earth Catalog; various iterations of these pieces were collected in Kesey's Garage Sale (1973) and Demon Box (1986). From Wikipedia: Kesey's Garage Sale is a collection of essays and other writings by Ken Kesey, published in 1973.[1] The book features the play "Over the Border" which is based on the time Kesey spent hiding in Mexico from drug charges in the United States.[citation needed] It is illustrated by the cartoonist and Merry Prankster Paul Foster, and also includes contributions from Paul Krassner, Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, Hugh Romney and Arthur Miller. Much of the material had previously appeared elsewhere. An anonymous reviewer in American Humor writes that it contains "intriguing nuggets of wisdom" on Kesey's views.

Description: First edition. A uniquely decorated copy, fully marbled in white, red, yellow, and green by Kesey on covers as well as edges. Painted inscription "For Keith / Ken Kesey" on front free endpaper. According his son Zane, Ken began experimenting with marbling techniques in 1964 while traveling on the bus FURTHUR and dropping acid for the first time. Oil paint floating in a puddle entranced the Merry Pranksters and they began dipping objects into the mixture, creating instant objet d'art. Later in his life Kesey returned to this technique, psychedelically marbling, finishing, and signing around 15-20 books total. This is one of those scarce copies. xviii, 238 pp. Near Fine with paint rubbed off extremities and a small spot on bottom of front board. No jacket. A psychedelic lollipop swirl of original art from the acclaimed writer and countercultural icon.
