Description: FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. Half titles, front. by Millais vol. I, 32pp cata. (July 1882) vol. II. Untrimmed in orig. olive brown dec. cloth, blocked in black & dark red, spine lettered in gilt; vol. I expertly recased, a little dulled & marked. See Trollope Society Catalogue 72; See Sadleir 65. Sadleir states that Kept in the Dark 'was not reprinted in its original form', and that 'the unsold sheets of the first edition were bound up, two-volumes-in-one'. However, the edition statement in vol. I shows that a two-volume second edition was in fact published, albeit in small numbers. It is evidently exceptionally scarce in this format; on Copac only the National Library of Scotland lists a 2-volume second edition.

The first US edition was Harper's, in the usual single-volume format, published just after the UK edition, in late September 1882. Sadleir, Trollope 65. 2 volumes in 1, small quarto (170 x 124 mm). Contemporary grey-green half calf by Birdsall & Son, Northampton, titles and decorative tooling in gilt to spine, green cloth boards, yellow edges. Wood-engraved frontispiece after a drawing by Millais. Armorial bookplate of Lord Esmé S. Gordon to front pastedown. Head of spine sometime expertly repaired, lightly rubbed, faint scattered spotting, else clean and unmarked; a very good copy.
