Mother Goose (französisch Ma Mère l'Oye, deutsch Mutter Gans) ist eine literarische Figur aus Kinderreimen und Märchen, die besonders in Amerika und Großbritannien weit verbreitet ist. Sie wird in Buchillustrationen meist als ältere Bauersfrau mit einem hohen Spitzhut dargestellt, alternativ auch als Gans mit einer Mütze. Mother Goose rhymes (Mother-Goose-Reime) stehen als Gattungsbezeichnung für Gedichte, die sich als humorige Verse, Abzählreime oder Schlaflieder an Kinder richten, ein einfaches Versmaß besitzen und teils mündlich überliefert wurden. Die erste namentliche Erwähnung von Mother Goose datiert auf 1697, als der Schriftsteller und Bewahrer von Märchen Charles Perrault unter dem Namen seines Sohnes eine Sammlung von acht Märchen in französischer Sprache veröffentlichte. Die Sammlung wurde unter ihrem Untertitel ?Contes de ma mère l'Oye? (Geschichten von meiner Mutter Gans) bekannt. 1729 erschien mit Robert Samber's Histories or Tales of Past Times die erste Übersetzung der Edition ins Englische, und machte die Märchen in der englischsprachigen Welt bekannt. Kate Greenaway (Catherine Greenaway) (* 17. März 1846 in London; ? 6. November 1901 in Hampstead) war eine englische Aquarellmalerin und Illustratorin von Kinderbüchern. Mit 12 Jahren war sie bereits Preisträgerin der South Kensington School of Art (Islington branch), die 1896 das Royal College of Art wurde. Sie gewann auch später einige Medaillen, einschließlich der "National". Sie besuchte die Schule von "Heatherley's" und die neu eröffnete Slade School of Fine Art. Sie studierte dort unter Alphonse Legros. Ihre Illustrationen hatten außergewöhnlichen Charme. Sie zeigten freche oder sittsame Kinder mit lockigen Haaren, in altmodischer Kleidung ? hübsche Mädchen in Kittelschürzen mit Hauben oder in Rüschenkleidern mit Hüten und Jungen in kurzen Jacken ? die in einer unschuldigen Welt lebten, wo sie keinen ernsthaften Schaden jemals erlitten. Ihre Bücher, Karten und Almanach-Serien zeigen Kates Einfühlungsvermögen in Linien und ihren Instinkt für Figurenkomposition. Die dekorative Wirkung ihrer unschuldigen Kindern in der Natur mit Blumensträußen, Girlanden und Kränzen ist das Merkmal und der zauberhafte Reiz von Kates Welt. Ihr Vater zeigte ihre Arbeiten dem Farbendrucker Edmund Evans, der einer Zusammenarbeit mit Kate zustimmte. Für ihr Buch Under the Window (1878) wurden neue Techniken der Photolithographie verwendet, um ihre Aquarelle zu drucken. Evans war in der Lage, den Charme von Greenaways idyllischen, pastoralen Szenen auf Papier zu übersetzen durch ein kostspieliges Verfahren, das das Fotografieren von ihren zierlichen Aquarellen auf Holzblöcke bedurfte. Diese wurden dann so angeordnet, dass einige Farben sich überlappten. Entgegen dem Expertenrat druckte Evans nur 20.000 Exemplare, weil das Buch 6 Shilling kostete im Gegensatz zu den üblichen Sixpence-Kinderbüchern. Diese erste Auflage war sofort ausverkauft und es wurde ein zweiter Druck, dieses Mal von 70.000 Büchern hergestellt. Dieses Buch verschaffte ihr den Durchbruch. Binding gently age worn, small paper chip along spine (as often seen), mostly light or inoffensive signs of handling and time but nothing severe or unsightly, book remains overall attractive as an object. Paper is gently toned, still clean, tight, sound internally. Still attractive on the shelf. The book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in overall nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive. Description: First edition of this miniature alphabet book illustrated by Golden Age great Kate Greenaway. Kate Greenaway achieved great success in 1878 with her first solo publication UNDER THE WINDOW, and quickly became a household name. This achievement came after years of study at the National Art Training School and the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Elizabeth Thompson (later Lady Butler), Edward Burne-Jones, and Walter Crane. Her style, featuring rosy-cheeked children and young adults, captures a romantic and cheerful brand of Victorian childhood nostalgia; she was one of the most well-known illustrators of the Golden Age, and her art adorns everything from books to greeting cards to home decor. This little volume may seem simple in its scope, but is evidence of Greenaway's appreciation for art history; during her education, she spent time studying illuminated manuscripts at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the letters inhabited by playful children in this volume find their aesthetic ancestors in these manuscripts.
