Greeanway, Catherine "Kate" (1846-1901). Kate Greenaway Pictures from Originals Presented by Her to John Ruskin and Other Personal Friends (hitherto unpublished). Frederick Warne and Company, Ltd, London, 1921.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 11+[20 unnumbered illustrations] pages with frontispiece and illustrations with titled tissue guards. Folio (11 1/2" x 10") bound in original quarter beige cloth with green lettering to spine with gilt and green lettering to cover and remnants of jacket. With an appreciation by H M Cundall. First edition. Catherine "Kate" Greenaway (17 March 1846 6 November 1901) was an English children's book illustrator and writer. Her drawings gave rise to a fashion in young children's clothing in the 1880s and 1890s. Greenaway spent much of her childhood at Rolleston, Nottinghamshire. She studied at what is now the Royal College of Art in London, in the section for women. (The college was then headed by Richard Burchett.) Her first book, Under the Window (1879), a collection of simple, perfectly idyllic verses about children, was a bestseller. Greenaway's paintings were reproduced by chromoxylography, by which the colours were printed from hand-engraved wood blocks by the firm of Edmund Evans. Through the 1880s and 1890s, her only rivals in popularity in children's book illustration were Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott. "Kate Greenaway" children, all of them girls and boys too young to be put in trousers, were dressed in her own versions of late 18th century and Regency fashions: smock-frocks and skeleton suits for boys, high-waisted pinafores and dresses with mobcaps and straw bonnets for girls. The influence of children's clothes in portraits by British painter John Hoppner (1758 1810) may have provided her some inspiration. Liberty of London adapted Kate Greenaway's drawings as designs for actual children's clothes. A full generation of mothers in the liberal-minded "artistic" British circles who called themselves The Souls and embraced the Arts and Crafts movement dressed their daughters in Kate Greenaway pantaloons and bonnets in the 1880s and 1890s. The style was often used by painter Maude Goodman in her depictions of children. Greenaway was elected to membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1889. She lived in an Arts and Crafts style house she commissioned from Richard Norman Shaw in Frognal, London, although she spent summers in Rolleston (Wikipedia). Condition: Front heal corner bumped and rubbed through. Jacket front panel and fold over left the rest lacking else a very good copy in a partial jacket.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Although Warne frequently published ( very attractive ) reprints of many of Greenaway's works, this volume is a set of hitherto unpublished plates tipped in to hand made paper. They are extraordinary examples of her work, each plate a faithful reproduction of a watercolour presented to John Ruskin or other personal friends of the artists. There are twenty plates, as well as the photographic frontispiece. Just a touch of soiling to the yellow buchram sline, and light offsetting to the endpapers. The corners of the olive green cloth boards are bright and unworn, with just a bit of bumping and rubbing to the tips. A quite handsome copy of a very nicely published tribute to Greenaway's artistry. The first edition, from Frederick Warne in 1921.

She had admirers in the art world, most famously John Ruskin, with whom she had a long and warm correspondence, and who praised her work in 'Praeterita' and in his Oxford Lectures, where he commented on her "profound sentiment of love for children," and noted the way she put "the child alone on the scene," showing "the infantine nature in all its naïveté, its gaucherie, its touching grace, its shy alarm, its discoveries, ravishments, embarrassments, and victories; the stumblings of it in wintry ways, the enchanted smiles of its spring time, and all the history of its fond heart and guiltless egoism" International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Green marbled endpapers. Slight staining to bottom left corner of front cover. Previous owner's neat gift inscription dated 1921. A very good copy. In the original beige dust jacket printed in olive green, lightly rubbed and with small piece missing from front flap. This work looks at her original art, presented by her to John Ruskin, and other friends of hers. Catherine Greenaway (1846-1901) was an English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children's book illustrations. She received her education in graphic design and art between 1858 and 1871 from the Finsbury School of Art, the South Kensington School of Art, the Heatherley School of Art, and the Slade School of Fine Art. She began her career designing for the burgeoning holiday card market, producing Christmas and Valentine's cards. In 1879 wood-block engraver and printer Edmund Evans printed Under the Window, an instant best-seller, which established her reputation. Her collaboration with Evans continued throughout the 1880s and 1890s. The depictions of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in a Queen Anne style were extremely popular in England and internationally, sparking the Kate Greenaway style. Within a few years of the publication of Under the Window Greenaway's work was imitated in England, Germany, and the United States. This work looks at her original art, presented by her to John Ruskin, and other friends of hers. Greenaway was a Victorian artist, well beloved for her children's book illustrations, produced in the Golden Age of book illustration. Most of her drawings depiction Queen Anne style costume, an imaginary eighteenth century style rather than Victorian. Schuster & Engen 229. Thomson 90.
