Internally pages clean, free of previous owners marks or signatures. Photograph frontispiece has discolored pages adjacent to it, including title page. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. The binding is tight and hinges intact.

Pictorial elements to cover and spine in gold, black and forest green. Single black rule border to cover board. 1st issue/state with pictorial overlay on title page misprinted upside down. Generally neat and sound with mild shelf soiling to boards and light foxing to the recto of the frontis photo illustration. Top edge gilt; untrimmed front edge with some several pages opened a little roughly. Prior owner's large engraved pictorial bookplate to front pastedown, partailly atop a small morocco bookplate. An unexplained small ink stamp to the rear pastedown - "General Literature" - but otherwise clean and unmarked. Light crimping to cloth at crwon of the spine; one or two mild gaps between signature in the internals. Illustrated with woodcut impressions in-text and lithographs on glossy stock. Uncommon 1st state. VG-

Description: Very good first edition. Olive cloth covered boards with gold text and green, black and gold graphics on front panel and spine. Edges at head and tail of board spine are chipped and frayed. All board edges are rubbed. Fore-edge corners are turned in, and rubbed with a small amount of fraying. Top of page edges are gilt; side and lower edges are untrimmed. Lovely illustrations by Genjiro Yeto. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description.
