Allen Ginsberg. Kaddish and Other Poems 1958-1960 [Black Inside Covers]. City Lights Books, San Francisco, 1961.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: San Francisco: City Lights Books, 1961. Apparent (per Dowden) intermediary between the Fifth and Sixth Printings, with black inside covers (instead of the usual white), seven-line publisher's statement on back, and no printer's statement. 16mo (6.25" x 4.75") 100pp. Printed black and white wraps with $1.50 price on back. Covers rubbed along edges, with dampstain at bottom half of spine extending at deepest a half-inch onto front and back covers, but not involving interior. Front cover opens to edge of spine, with some distress along glueline. Vertical crease to spine, with binding opening easily to pp. 56-57 and exposing stitching, though pages still holding soundly. Pages a bit toned along edges but unmarked. George Dowden writes of this printing in his Ginsberg bibliography ".there is one ed. which was printed in the United States, apparently between the Villers and Edwards Brothers eds., the printer of which has not been determined (publisher's records incomplete), an ed. which contains no information as to the edition, or printing, any where in it, which has black inside front and back covers unlike the white of any other eds., and which does not have the A.G. statement on the outside back cover, but, rather, a publisher's statement which is shorter and different than the publisher's statements on the first, British-printed, ed." Not mentioned in Morgan. Rather uncommon (or at least commonly unnoticed). [Dowden p. 8; not in Morgan].

GINSBERG, Allen. KADDISH AND OTHER POEMS 1958-1960. City Lights, San Francisco, 1961.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: While "Howl" is undeniably the more important poem, "Kaddish" is arguably the better one. Written in the wake of his mother Naomi's suicide, it remains raw, immediate, and moving - one of Ginsberg's finest. Part of City Lights' famed Pocket Poets Series, this is the increasingly uncommon (and frequently misidentified) true first edition, about which there is admitedly some geniune and legitimate confusion. Morgan is in disagreement with both Dowden and Cook as regards the true first printing; however, while Morgan is usually the more reliable source, bibliographic concensus seems to have settled on the priority laid out by Cook/Dowden - and this cataloguer (for reasons that surpass mere self-interest but are too lengthy for this catalogue description) strongly agrees. One of 2500 copies. [Morgan A4.a2 - incorrectly]. [Cook p. 42-3]. [Dowden p. 9-8]. Wraps. 16mo. Original wraps. Near fine. Sharp and clean, with only the barest hints of shelfwear and toning. Decidedly scarce in this condition.

GINSBERG, Allen.. Five titles from the City Lights Pocket Poet Series. Kaddish and Other Poems 1958-1960; Reality Sandwiches; Planet News; The Fall of America, Poems of these States 1965-1971; Mind Breaths, Poems 1972-1977.. San Francisco: City Lights Books, 1961-63-68-72-77, 1961.

Price: US$512.35 + shipping

Description: First editions, first printings, of all except two of Ginsberg's contributions to the City Lights Pocket Poet Series, these the copies of fellow poet Kenneth Irby, each signed, dated, and located by him on the front pastedown or title page, often in mimicry of a bookplate, and with his pencilled annotations giving the sources of the epigraphs in Kaddish and Reality Sandwiches. Irby (1936-2015) was a poet frequently associated with the Black Mountain School. His work is concerned with the psychic interactions of humans and landscapes, particularly the landscapes of the western USA. The locations of his inscriptions chart his travels across the USA, through Albuquerque, New York, Berkeley, and Lawrence. In 1958 he attended Harvard as a PhD student and heard Ginsberg and Charles Olson read at a local bookstore: this was his introduction to their poetry. He later became friends with Ed Dorn, Robert Duncan, and Robert Creeley. First printings of The Fall of America exist in both black and white wrappers, with no priority. "According to the publisher's memory", notes Morgan, "the white cover with black print is the true first printing. Bob Wilson, an authority on modern first editions through his Phoenix Book Shop in New York City, remembers that half the first printing was with the white covers and half with the black. He received both these issues simultaneously. The compiler has found Wilson's memory to be much more accurate than City Lights' records and it seems likely that they had the first 10,000 printed with 5,000 of each cover". Mind Breaths is the paperback issue, published simultaneously with the scarce hardback issue. The first and final of Ginsberg's Pocket Poet titles are not present here: the rare and infamous Howl (1956) and Plutonian Ode (1982). A4 a1.1; A6 a1.1; A15 a1.1; A26 a1.1b; A37 a1. 5 works, small octavo. Original black and white wrappers. Wrappers generally rubbed, first three works lightly toned with a few marks, Reality Sandwiches a little worn at spine ends, Kaddish with slight loss at spine ends, 3 cm split at head of rear joint, rear wrapper slightly creased. A very good set indeed.
