CRICHTON, Michael.. Jurassic Park. A Novel.. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990, 1990.

Price: US$1924.90 + shipping

Description: First trade edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Paul - With best wishes, Michael Crichton. 7/9/98". Crichton's idea of an entertainment park filled with the prehistoric predators enthralled producers, who raced to acquire the filming rights prior to the book's publication. The first film (1993) was directed by Steven Spielberg with the screenplay by Crichton and David Koepp. Crichton (1942-2008), who earned his MD at Harvard Medical School, used his educational background to write works of science fiction which explore the dangers of technological advancement and man's dominion over nature. "Though he was often criticized by the scientific community for being sensationalist, Crichton was known for the careful research that went into his work [and] meticulously studied the science underlying the premise of Jurassic Park" (Ency. Brit.). The filmmakers followed suit when creating Stan Winston's accurately life-sized mechanical dinosaurs, which were marvels of technological innovation. It was first published as a signed limited edition by the Franklin Library earlier the same year. Octavo. Original blue quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blue board sides stamped with gilt device on front and publisher's blind device on rear. With dust jacket by Chip Kidd. Illustrated chapter titles and textual decorations integral to the story, for example warning signs and genome sequences. A near-fine copy in near-fine, unclipped jacket.
