Kipling, Rudyard. The Jungle Book. London: Macmillan and Co., 1894.

Price: US$1750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, William Henry Drake, and Paul Frenzeny. First edition, first printing. Publisher's blue boards, spines lettered in gilt, pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front boards in gilt, all edges gilt, green coated endpapers. Near fine, with a touch of toning to spine, light rubbing to spine ends, lightly bumped bottom right corner of front board, front free endpaper cleanly and discreetly reattached, ownership inscription to half-title page, a hint of dampstaining to bottom margin of title page, and very light spotting to some pages at front and rear of book. Overall, a bright and sturdy copy. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses, the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli, a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other, each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume, the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs, including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books, based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India, are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century, which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay.

Rudyard Kipling. The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book previously owned by Churchill's friend and publisher, Nelson Doubleday. Macmillan and Co., London, 1894.

Price: US$1850.00 + shipping

Description: This is a compelling set of British first editions of perhaps Kipling’s most famous works – the first and second Jungle Books. These copies were previously owned by Churchill’s friends and publishers, Frank and Nelson Doubleday, and apparently used by Nelson to prepare Doubleday’s 1946 editions. Ironically, Kipling’s quintessential tales of India were conceived in Vermont, where Kipling and his father, John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) "worked together in the closest harmony as the two sat smoking their pipes and plotting out fresh stories together." (Allen, Kipling Sahib, p.328) Here Mowgli was born, the infant found by Father Wolf, saved from Shere Khan, and tutored in the Laws of the Jungle by Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. "The pen took charge, and I watched it begin to write stories about Mowgli and the animals, which later grew into the Jungle Books."Kipling had left India for the last time in 1891, but "With his father’s guidance he learned to ‘undo what the North has done’ and so let back in all ‘the sights and the sounds and smells / That ran with our youth in the eye of the Sun’ – the flotsam and jetsam of twelve years of Indian living – just long enough to create the celebration of childhood that is The Jungle Book " (Allen, Kipling Sahib, p. 364) The Jungle Book was published in 1894, seven stories and seven poems with eight of the illustrations by the author’s father. The Second Jungle Book was published in 1895, eight stories and eight poems, this time with thirty-seven illustrations by the author’s father. Both first editions are bound in matching blue cloth, strikingly illustrated and printed in gilt on the spines and front covers, the contents with dark bluish green endpapers, illustration plates, and all edges trimmed and gilt. The Jungle Book is first printing, with "R. & R. Clark" as printer on p. 212 (as opposed to ‘R. & R. Clark Ltd.’). First English edition of The Second Jungle Book is confirmed by 238 pages of text, ‘The King’s Ankus’ stopping abruptly at line 8, p139, with 515 words missing. (Richards, A76, p.80 and A85, p.87)These copies came to us from the library of Nelson Doubleday Jr. (1933-2015), son of Nelson Doubleday (1889-1949), and grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday (1862-1934), Kipling’s friend and U.S. publisher and founder of the Doubleday publishing empire. F.N. Doubleday met Kipling while working for Charles Scribners Sons. They struck an intimate, lifelong friendship. Kipling nicknamed Doubleday "Effendi", a play on his initials - F.N.D. Frank's son Nelson was president of the firm from 1922 to 1946, as was Nelson Jr., from 1978 to 1983.Each of these first edition volumes bears a small, printed slip of paper on the title page with new publisher information reading, in three lines, "Doubleday & Company, Inc. | Garden City New York | 1946". The slips were pasted over the original publication information (though both have since come loose). Doubleday & Company published an edition of these books in 1946, the last year of Nelson's presidency. The title page of the 1946 edition matches those of these British first editions with the pasted-on slips, making it likely to the point of certainty that these particular volumes were used as mockups by Nelson Doubleday.Condition is very good minus. The bindings are square and tight with some fraying to spine ends and dulling of spine gilt. The contents remain crisp and complete and the books feel unread. We note all illustrations present, bright page edge gilt, light intermittent spotting (barely noticeable in The Jungle Book), and cosmetic cracking to the endpapers at the gutters that does not impact binding integrity. Additional 1946 edition mock-up notations include title in pencil on The Jungle Book frontispiece recto, pencil strikethrough of "All rights reserved" on both title pages, and brief pencil notation to the upper left front free endpaper verso.Reference: Richards A76 & A85.

A lovely mixed set of one of the cornerstone titles in children's literature & Kipling highlight & along with Just So Stories, his most beloved work. Custom red & blue leather slipcase. First published in magazine format in 1893-4. British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling was born in India lived there & in England & wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The tales are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families & communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics & society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned "man cub" Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian Jungle with the help of Baloo the bear & Bagheera the black panther, & then has to fight the tiger Shere Khan. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", the story of a heroic mongoose, & "Toomai of the Elephants", the tale of a young elephant-handler. "The White Seal", in which the main character seeks a haven for his people where they would be safe from hunters, has been considered a metaphor for Zionism, then in its beginning. As with much of Kipling's work, each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verse, & succeeded by another. $2475.

Kipling, Rudyard. The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book.. Macmillan 1894-95, London, 1894.

Price: US$4000.00 + shipping

Description: First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo, two volumes, original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, engraved frontispiece with tissue guard present. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling, W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. One of Kipling's most desirable works, uncommon in this condition. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse, and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India, and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly, Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement, "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories, beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers.

Kipling, Rudyard. The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book.. Macmillan 1894-95, London, 1894.

Price: US$6500.00 + shipping

Description: First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo, two volumes, original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, engraved frontispiece with tissue guard present. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling, W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. A sharp example.

A neatly written letter signed “Rudyard Kipling”, addressed to Mrs. Mary Hallock Foote. Kipling apologizes for the delay in writing before remarking on Mrs. Foote’s sick daughter, his own niece’s health, and the role of mothers. He also goes on to playfully chastise Foot for ending “The Chosen Valley” and acknowledges his hypocrisy over hating inquiries about his publications while wanting to ask Foote a myriad of questions about hers. With flattened mail folds. Bold, clear signature. Very fine. In part: “ That news about your daughter is not good. When a man or a woman goes down with something it’s bad enough but with a child – well my brother in law’s baby, a three toothed little maiden of fourteen months and much dignity. She is not quite well – a cold or something – and you can distinctly hear all our hearts beating all down the road when she sneezes. God certainly made the little ones but Eblis made their diseases. At the best of times one small child is full employment for all the grown-ups within hail. It is glorious to have gifts – two of them – So that you can express in both the ways the shadows of those things which you imagine but I can well see how there must be a big tug now and again between those gifts your own to you, and those other gifts that come to all mothers. I’ve a notion however that sometimes giving up is accounted as more than giving out. All the same Fate is queer and she lacks tact Sometimes I wonder but more often I wish I had been born befo’ de war. Then I would have taken my dollars down South and bought me a man and a woman and perhaps, got some work of them. How do you manage in Idaho? Chinamen at $60 a month or kidnapped aliens from railway gangs? The subject interests me more deeply than anything else on the top of Earth at present We’ve had another indignation meeting and the vote is that this community views with alarm and disgust, the expressed intention of Mrs. Hallock Foote to end ‘The Chosen Valley’ next month. This community expected a solid year of the said story and refuses to be pacified even by the picture of the girl looking through the window People drive me wild by asking me a whole lot of questions that I used to call Dee Impertinent but now – if you only know the amount of questions, all personal, all unauthorized, that I want to ask you! ” Mary Hallock Foote (1847–1938) was an American author and illustrator. Upon moving out west, Foote keep a record of her travels and wrote stories for Eastern readers as a correspondent to “The Century Magazine” and other periodicals. She wrote several novels.
