Description: . 26 cm. 428 pág. Albania. Europa del este. Monografías. Descripciones.

Lear, Edward.. Journals of a Landscape Painter in Albania, &c.. London: Richard Bentley, 1851., 1851.

Price: US$1250.00 + shipping

Description: "His career as a 'topographical landscape painter' took him to Ireland, France, Italy, Albania, Greece, the Near East, and India. Lear's travel books, like his drawings, watercolors, lithographs, and paintings, are expertly executed, sharp observations of the minutest details from all the countries he visited, many of which were hardly accessible to the contemporary traveler. The adventurous and pioneering sense that drove Lear compulsively to such remote outposts is perhaps one reason for the thrilling, crisp intensity and freshness conveyed in his art" (John Lehmann, Edward Lear and His World). Large octavo. [4], 428 pp. Map and twenty tinted lithographic plates. Original dark blue blindstamped cloth with gilt spine. Lightly chipped at spine ends, corners rubbed, back joint cracking, but cords sound, one and a half inch tear along back joint near top edge. Early ink donorÕs inscription on title-page, small marginal dampstain on map. Still, a very good copy, with the plates fresh and clean. First edition. Abbey, Travel, 45.

LEAR, Edward. [with signed presentation from Lear to Holman Hunt].. Journals of a Landscape Painter in Albania, &c.. Richard Bentley., London., 1851.

Price: US$3522.38 + shipping

Description: 8vo. pp. (iv), 428. Frontispiece map and 20 tinted lithographic plates printed by Hullmandel and Walton. Original blind-stamped blue cloth, rebacked, with the original rubbed and faded backstrip laid down. Some minor foxing throughout, generally not affecting image. William Holman Hunt.'s copy of the first edition with a from Lear. The inscription is dated August 30th 1852 and was written at Clive Vale Farm in Hastings. Lear was in fact living with Hunt at Clive Vale during the second half of 1852, during which time he was to meet other members of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. The notes for this volume were collected during two journeys through Northern and Western Greece, Albania, and Macedonia in 1848 and 1849. Lear visited Corfu in 1848 then travelled to Constantinople with Sir Stafford and Lady Canning, and on his return overland from Salonica he visited Macedonia and Albania. The second journey saw Lear return to Albania, as well as taking in Epirus and Thessaly. The lithographs in this volume are tinted with three colours - a blue-grey, a grey and sepia. This may have been a technical experiment on Lear's part. The plates include views of Yenidje, Vodhena, Monastir, Akhrida, Avlona, Tyrana, Kroia, Skodra, Durazzo, Berat, Khimara, Tepelini, Parga, Meteora, and Tempe. [Abbey Travel 45].
