Condition: Very Good

Description: Robert John Bush, London. 1870. First Edition. 19th Century half morocco binding, 4to. 10 inches x 7 inches (26cms x 18cms). Ruled gilt on upper and lower covers, ruled and lettered gilt in spine compartments with gilt fillets and decorations, five raised bands. All edges gilt. Yellow end papers. Blank, half-title, title, dedication leaf, preface, list of plates, contents. pp [i]- xvii; 1-272. With 40 plates (including frontispiece) and 40 vignette illustrations in text after charming landscape drawings by the author. All as called for, save that this copy appears to have been bound without the map of Corsica that should have been inserted to face page 1 of the main text. There is no evidence to suggest that this was ever present. Binding is tight and clean with some very slight rubbing to edges, corners just a little bumped. Some dust marking to end papers which are a little creased and frayed at edges. Text block is tight and sound and in fresh, crisp condition save for some scattered light foxing spots and with slight cockling to edges of the last 3 leaves. A very nice example of Lear's classic travel journal in an attractive contemporary binding. Edward Lear (1812-1888) is now best known for his limericks and fantastical verse but he was also a skilled artist and amateur naturalist. He was a member of the Linnean Society and illustrated several fine bird books, including a collaboration with John Gould on 'The Birds of Europe'. He traveled widely and published a number of illustrated travel journals, of which this was the last. Lear himself was closely involved in the preparation of the wood engravings from his own drawings and spent the summer of 1869 in Paris working on these. He returned to London at the end of that year to oversee the publication of the journal. The book was actually published for the Christmas market of 1869, although the first edition was dated 1870 on the title-page. A heavy book and additional postage may be required.

Edward Lear. Journal of a Landscape Painter in Corsica. Robert John Bush, London, 1870.

Price: US$449.14 + shipping

Description: The first edition of this travelogue by well-known Victorian author, Edward Lear. Beautifully complemented by illustrations painted by Lear during his Corsican travels. Collated, complete with a frontispiece and forty plates. With the half-title. Rebound, in a full cloth binding. Ex-library, with stamps for Chicheser Diocesan Conference and Retreat House to the half-title, title page and dedication leaf. With a gift inscription to the verso of front endpaper, 'Lear In Corsica for Julian and Kathleen Symons'. Below this is a poem told through the form of limerick, a literary form that Lear made popular. The poem regards a gentleman who 'packed his Nonsence up, like love, inside a box' and leaves on a coach. The poem could be a parallel of Lear, or in homage to him, as he was known for his literary nonsense. Lear was an English artist, and author. His literary nonsense poetry and prose earned him a great reputation in Victorian Britain. He had published travel journals previously, on his travels to Italy and Albania. This work has been produced to Lear's journals he composed whilst travelling in Corsica and examples of landscapes he painted whilst there. A lovely guide to Corsica in the nineteenth century. Rebound, in a full cloth binding. Externally, smart with just a few marks to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Ex-library stamps to the half-title, title page, and dedication page. Occasional spots to pages. Very Good Indeed

LEAR, Edward.. Journal of a Landscape Painter in Corsica.. , 1870.

Price: US$1229.37 + shipping

Description: London, Robert John Bush, 1870. 8vo. Original terracotta cloth by W. Bone & Son, London, with their ticket, boards with borders in blind, spine lettered in gilt, brown endpapers; pp. xvi, 272, wood-engraved frontispiece, 39 wood-engraved plates, and wood-engraved illustrations after Lear, one wood-engraved map of the island; light wear to hinges, spine a little darkened, otherwise a very clean and fresh copy. First edition. When Lear visited Corsica in 1867 and 1868, whilst wintering at Cannes, he noted a strange melancholic atmosphere, which he attributed to the unusual effects of light experienced there, and his Journal (Lear's last travel book), both depicts and describes this. In preparing the plates and illustrations for the work, Lear opted to use the medium of wood-engraving (rather than lithography) for the reproduction of his water-colours, since the laborious process of preparing the lithographic plates used in his previous Journals had become a tiresome and disagreeable chore for him. Although the majority of the plates were engraved by Lear, the remainder were prepared for him by others and in his preface he acknowledges their 'care and accuracy' in engraving his drawings.

Description: Inscribed by Lear in 1874 to H.P. Le Mesurier with whom he had sailed twenty years earlier on the steamship ' The Indus'. Le Mesurier had been the Chief Engineer of the Great Indian Pennisular Railway and facilitated Lear's excursions while in India during 1874, eventually accompanying him as far as Bologna on his return home. Toward the end of the century the author Richard Bramley Moore celebrated his own journey to Corsica by binding up Lear's book with an illustrated 63 page account of the island by Gaston Vullier extracted from "Le Tour du Monde". A leather bookplate commemorates that trip in the spring of 1896. at which time a short note was added to the half-title.
