Description: One of 410 copies, SIGNED, unsewn, laid into printed paper wrapper. Wrapper is worn at head and tail of spine, with a two cm tear at bottom offront hinge, acetate dust wrapper is torn at hinges with small hole torn fron backbone . Text is fine. Laid in custom traycase of yellow and black calf, the inside is sealed with black felt, black and gilt title and date on spine. A very beautiful case for an uncommon volume.

Description: First edition, signed limited issue, reserved for subscribers, number 340 of 400 copies on vélin de Lana and signed by the author, from a total edition of 410. There were a further ten copies on vélin d'Arches, numbered I to X. Published anonymously in the September 1946, the semi-autobiographical novel follows its debauched criminal protagonist across Europe. Genet appropriates Christian language, inverting virtues and vices, and creating a religion of criminality in opposition to the society which has shaped him. Journal du voleur is dedicated to Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, and prompted Sartre's 1952 essay "Saint Genet": an attempt "to prove that genius is not a gift but the way out that one invents in desperate cases" (quoted in Gaitet, p. 16). A near-fine copy in toned and sunned slipcase with a little wear to extremities.
