Condition: Very Good

Description: RARE MALAY EDITION- A tight, sound and unmarked copy- deckle edged decorated end pages - map in front and ship on the sea in back drawings by William kemp Starrett." Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now."- The book is absorbingly interesting: dramatic, subtle, fascinating with allurement." Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now."- The book is absorbingly interesting: dramatic, subtle, fascinating with allurement." The New York Times.- Honor, like virtue or reputation, is more easily lost than regained. Such is the premise of Lord Jim. Conrad himself half-admits in his cover note that this is probably his best novel. For more than an absorbing tale of guilt, love, and adventure, it is also a book that asks big and incisive questions. What is honor? Is there such a thing in life as principle? Or rather can one live without principles and, if not, then what if one has to die for them? Jim is young and idealistic, a talented and unafraid sailor, but he has made an early mistake, a lapse that caused him to abandon ship at the wrong time. Relegated to the fringe of the mariners' community, he drifts into in a lost corner of the Indonesian islands. It is there that he becomes Lord Jim, a pacifier, an arbiter among the local folk, a living legend. The lost province of Patusan, besides, is where he finds romance in the person of the smart, attractive, and spirited half-caste Jewel. Yet as strife re-emerges in the shape of a pirate raid on the town, Jim is soon torn between the defense of his patiently rebuilt self-regard and his love and life's salvation. Lord Jim is told in two parts, both drawing minutely and to striking effect from Conrad's personal experience of the sea and the tropics. First comes the strange and paradoxical shipwreck of the Patna, a transport for Meccan pilgrims on which Jim acts as skipper. Then the book follows Jim in his subsequent drift and his reinvention in Patusan. The story is told by sea captain Charles Marlow, the same narrator Conrad has in Heart of Darkness, here however developed as a character at greater length and to greater effect. Finally, for those worried about political correctness, this is no tale of the white man come to rule over the brown, and Conrad's humanistic credentials only come out reinforced. Lord Jim is required reading for fans of Conrad and, capturing the values of a disappearing world like no other, one of the great novels of the turn of the twentieth century."

"By all thats wonderful, it is the sea, I believe, the sea itselfor is it youth alone? Who can tell? But you hereyou all had something out of life: money, lovewhatever one gets on shoreand, tell me, wasnt that the best time, that time when we were young at sea; young and had nothing, on the sea that gives nothing, except hard knocksand sometimes a chance to feel your strengththat onlywhat you all regret?"

Almayer, in Borneo, is hopelessly obsessed by his deluded dreams for himself and his daughter, which take no account of her falling in love with a handsome Balinese prince.Peyrol, the rover, returns to a France at war and finds the actions of those around him still overborne by memories of revolutionary terror. For the orphaned Lieutenant Real and Arlette love offers release but their romance seems doomed by the demands of his naval duties.Conrad's acute understanding of human psychology and its application across racial and ideological divides is the life-force of both stories.

JEAN-AUBRY, G. [Conrad, Joseph; Korzeniowski, Józef Teodor Konrad]. Joseph Conrad: Life and Letters. Doubleday, Page & Co., Garden City, 1927.

Price: US$60.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A Near Fine copy of the first edition, later printing, issued in two volumes in about Very Good dust jackets with the jackets showing some sunning to the spines, some chips and some quite small tears, some damage to the right side of the jacket's spine panel for Volume One, and some sunning to the volumes where the jackets are chipped. The original publisher's blue cloth is lettered and decorated in gilt on the spines and each front board bears a facsimile of Joseph Conrad's signature in gilt. The top edge of each closed page block is in gilt as well. The set contains a frontispiece in each volume and the two volumes together contain a total of 12 plates and four facsimiles, including two tipped-in. In spite of some flaws in his work, this set was a significant step forward in Conrad studies. To produce it, Jean-Aubry gathered approximately 2,000 Conrad letters. Those in private hands he returned their owners and dozens of them have since disappeared. (Some of Conrad's letters to John Galsworthy are known only due to this work.) In his presentation of some of the letters, Jean-Aubry left out matters that he, a product of his era, considered too delicate to include or which would, in his judgment, reflect poorly on Conrad or his correspondents. Altogether a rather nice and Near Fine set in Very Good dust jackets and RATHER SCARCE TO THE MARKET.
