Description: 3rd printing of 1st edition in 1939. No dust jacket. Condition is very good+. Red cloth boards show minimal shelf wear, with slight bumping/fading at top of spine and dust residue on top page edges. Spine is not faded, and black titles on spine and front are clear. No marks of any kind inside, clean text with slightly age browned. Overall a fine, tight copy.

Description: Good; paper-covered boards are worn at extremities, with small tears to top and bottom of spine; hinges starting. Interior contents pristine. No dust jacket. Tan linen-pattern paper over boards; titling in brick red on spine. Copyright 1939. Lippincott reprinted this book for the Liberty Book Club [this edition], which was founded in 1954 by Carl Aldo Marzani, a filmmaker and progressive political activist, and D. Angus Cameron. The Liberty Book Club reportedly had 8,000 members. This copy inscribed by author on title page: "For Robin Guravitz [?]-With all sorts of good wishes for your happiness. Pax! Dalton Trumbo May 15, 1964 Los Angeles." Trumbo was a successful screenwriter and one of the "Hollywood Ten," who were blacklisted from working on Hollywood films. He served prison time for contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions during Congressional HUAC hearings. Trumbo continued to work clandestinely on major films. His blacklisting ended in 1960 when he was given a screen credit for Exodus and Spartacus.

Description: J. B. Lippincott. 1939. New York. 309 pages. vintage Liberty Book Club Edition in rare DJ. Trumbo's classic in desirable, rare red DJ. corners show minor bumping. Pages rest tight. appears unread. Top page edges show most minor soiling at head. DJ is bright red. DJ backstrip is faded. Chipping along edges and at corner tips. DJ shows light soiling and some small staining. Despite the dj flaws, still quite attractive as it is uncommon in any state. VG/VG- One of the original Hollywood 10, Trumbo was blacklisted as a result of refusing to testify in front of the House of Un-American Activities Committee in October 1947. Trumbo would go on to win an oscar under a pseudonym for the Brave One in 1956. Much of his help and success during this difficult period came from his good friend, Kirk Douglas, who was King Kong of the box office at the time. This isTrumbo's classic anti-war novel and some 50 years later the basis for Metallica's hit song: ONE
