Description: First edition, first printing, lacking title page. One of 25 copies printed. 13 pp. 4to. Galsworthy had met Conrad in early 1893, when a passenger on board the Torrens, of which Conrad was the first mate. This piece was written as a review of Galsworthy's novel A Man of Property, the review appeared in the March 31, 1906 issue of Outlook magazine. Conrad later had to apologize to his friend Galsworthy when this was inadvertently omitted from Notes on Life & Letters (but was later collected in Last Essays). As with the companion piece, The Dover Patrol, Conrad disliked the initial printing because it lacked a title page (other than the wrapper), and asked that it immediately be reprinted to include one. This is the true first printing lacking a title page, though the second printing is the one most often seen today.
