Directions for the Gardiner is here published for the first time by Nonesuch (1932), heretofore in manuscript form only, being Evelyn's instructions for his gardens of Sayes Court, Deptford (now south-East London). Includes a catalog of the various species of flowers, trees, and shrubs in the Sayes Court gardens, instructions for their care, a month-to-month gathering/harvesting schedule with directions for preparation of salads for the table, a list of tools necessary for the garden, and a variety and wealth of information on the caretaking of a seventeenth century English manor garden. A presentation that might be considered the epitome of Evelyn's gardening knowledge. The foreword introduces John Evelyn and describes the original manuscript in detail. John Evelyn (1620-1706) was an English writer, gardener and diarist. In addition to his design at Sayes Court he also recognized as having built the first Italian Garden in England at his brother's estate, Wotton House in Surrey, which was also John's birthplace.
