Ridge, John R.. Joaquin Murieta: The Brigand Chief of California. The Grabhorn Press, San Francisco, 1932.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Description: Reprinted from the 1859 edition. First published in San Francisco in 1854. One of 400 copies, the first title of the Rare Americana Series by the Grabhorn Press. 116pp. Introduction by Francis P. Farquhar. 8 color reproductions from drawings by Charles Nahl, silhouettes by Valenti Angelo, folding broadside facsimile. Cloth-backed boards. A bit of offsetting (as usual) and very slight foxing to endpapers, but a very fine copy with plain dust jacket. The first book written on the celebrated Murieta, transforming him from a sanguinary outlaw to a mythical hero. Farquhar's introduction clarifies the confusion surrounding both the myth and the various editions of the book. "Joaquin Murieta. ranks as the most famous Gold Rush brigand. John R. Ridge, a.k.a. Yellow Bird, was the first to make known the story of Murieta in book form" (Kurutz). The tipped-in folding broadside is a facsimile of the original, sold by the Argonaut Book shop in their third California and the West catalogue, c.1942. [Kurutz: 533.1k; Zamorano Eighty: 64n].
