Condition: Very Good

Description: Very Good, plus a bit. See scans and description. London: Mills & Boon, 1917. First British Edition. Octavo, 324 pp + ads. Red cloth with black spine imprint. Certainly better then Very Good; a handsome, strong example. Moderate lightening at the spine, though with bold imprinting still; trace peripheral wear, some foxing at endpapers only, but almost no soiling. A propos to the subject matter - the mistreatment of animals - there is also herein a previous owner's Award Bookplate on the ffep, identifying this copy as "First Prize, awarded to Colin Kemp, Burgh School, Galashiels" for his essay on the subject of the book [awarded by the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals]. Over all, Very Good. See scans. The rather scarce British first edition of Jack London's late-life expose of the mistreatment inherent, as he saw it, in the conducting of shows involving performing animals, a subject he also treats directly in his foreword. A nice example, with a relevant bookplate. L13n
