The Text Block is clean, bright white, quite tight, straight and square, with deckled fore-edges and no markings of any kind. The Binding is full black cloth (color uniform throughout), with the title in gilt on the front board, title, etc., in gilt on the spine, unmarked endpapers, and all corners square and sharp. The Dust Jacket is bright and intact with the original price ($21.00) intact on the front flap and no signs of wear except one 1" tear at the top of the rear fold which has been discreetly closed from behind with archival (pH neutral) materials. This is the second novel in what has been called the Beloved Trilogy, consisting of Beloved (1987), Jazz, and Paradise (1997), three novels about love and African-American history. The author has said they are intended to be read together, explaining: "The conceptual connection is the search for the beloved - the part of the self that is you, and loves you, and is always there for you." It has also been said that the trilogy has roots in Dante's trilogy, The Divine Comedy. Jazz is set in 1926 in the Harlem Renaissance, with references back to the South of the 19th century.
