Description: 1949. First edition. 12p1906. First edition. xiv, [i], 294pp., 23 black and white plates, including the frontispeice, and a 2 page publisher's advertisment. With many references to Jane Austen's letters, this is a book for anyone who wants to know something more about Jane Austen's family. It contains an account of her two naval brothers: Sir Francis William Austen (1774-1865), who served in the East Indies, North Sea and the Baltic; and Rear-Admiral Charles John Austen (1779-1852), who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It has been written by the grandson of Sir Francis Austen. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soilking on the boards. The spine ends are bumped and the spine is slightly faded with some wear to the titling. The contents are tight and the pages are clean apart from some occasional pencil notes or lines on the margin, mostly referring to Jane Austen's letters. There is some foxing on the endpapers and first and last few pages, including some faint marks on the title page, and there is a little scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book. A name, date and place has been written on the front free endpaper.
