Description: First UK edition, first impression. Dahl's first novel for children was originally published in the US by Alfred A. Knopf in 1961. Described as "rude, naughty, anti-adult, creepy, and sometimes cruel" (ODNB), it was adapted into a film of the same name in 1996, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Musical. An early advert for the US edition appeared in the New York Times on 26 October 1961: "one is tempted to say that not since Alice has there been such a wonderland. The difference is that James is all boy and what transpires in the story is anything but Victorian". The New York Times, 26 October 1961. Octavo. Head of spine and top left corner of front cover chipped, some lifting to laminate as usual, minor foxing to endpapers: a very good copy.

DAHL, Roald.. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.. London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1967, 1967.

Price: US$1026.61 + shipping

Description: First UK edition, first impression, following the US first edition of 1964. For several years Dahl was unable to achieve publication in the UK. Jeremy Treglown, in his biography of Dahl, notes that when he finally achieved UK publication it was "in a way that both pleased him very much and allowed him to use his commercial cunning". Tessa Dahl's school friend, Camilla Unwin, was the daughter of Rayner Unwin, the publisher. Tessa gave Camilla copies of the US editions of James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and, as noted by Treglown, "a letter from Allen and Unwin was soon on its way to the author". Unwin was unaware that the books had been rejected by most established publishers in the UK and Dahl sent him "a poker-player's reply" asking how Unwin might improve on rivals' terms. Allen and Unwin suggested an old-fashioned arrangement: the publishers would print and market the books but without any advance to the author. Treglown notes "if sales didn't cover the costs of production. Dahl would make nothing. But any profit would be divided equally. and if the books were a success, his share would be bigger than under his other publishing contracts" (Treglown, pp. 177-8). Allen and Unwin printed their first two Dahl titles economically in East Germany which were bound in hardback and issued without a jacket. As a result, they could be sold at twelve shillings and sixpence which was considerably cheaper than most British hardback illustrated children's books at the time. The artist for this edition, Faith Jaques, "was one of the outstanding illustrators responsible for the renaissance of British picture books during the last three decades. Her special gift was an ability to translate the emotional tone of a text into the strong visual atmosphere created by her pen-and-ink drawings" (Tucker). Jeremy Treglown, Roald Dahl, 1994; Nicholas Tucker, "Obituary: Faith Jaques", The Independent, 6 August 1997. Octavo. Original laminated pictorial boards, spine and front cover lettered in black. No dust jacket issued. Numerous illustrations within the text by Faith Jaques. Notably fresh, head and foot of spine slightly chipped, slight cracking to laminate at foot of front joint, minor browning to endpapers; a near-fine copy.

Dahl, Roald; Simeon, Michael. JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. George Allen & Unwin, London, 1967.

Price: US$1200.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First UK edition of Dahl's escapist fruit adventure - a beautiful copy. Originally published in the U.S. in 1961 and newly illustrated by Simeon for this first British edition, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH was described in Allen & Unwin's foreword as Dahl's "first book for children" (somewhat accurate, if one disregards his earlier THE GREMLINS (1943), originally intended as the basis for a Disney film). Dahl's genius as a writer for all age groups lies in his refusal to strip his children's books of the pure, unadulterated nastiness at the core of his most memorable adult short stories; sex is absent, but the vulgarity and meanness in the darkness of the human heart is, if anything, greater and more fearsome here: for Dahl, hatred of injustice is born early in a child's spirit and festers until it finds some awful, Aunt-crushing catharsis. The gruesome revenges taken by the weak upon the strong are correspondingly satisfying, unfettered by impulses to mercy, and as deeply transgressive as ever: Dahl's works for children have often been objected to by adults and this particular book regularly features on lists of banned or challenged books in American libraries - but for many children, it is the spark of fantasy within bleak settings that appeals to the imagination without becoming saccharine. Tim Burton famously told Dahl's widow he wanted to turn JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH into a film because "it's the only book that ever gave me any hope when I was a child" (D IS FOR DAHL). Given the laminate boards, this book is extremely difficult to find in such lovely condition. 9.25'' x 6.5''. Original laminated pictorial boards. No jacket as issued. Illustrated by Simeon in black and white. 110, [2] pages. Laminate beginning to pull a tiny bit near joints (though entirely intact), else sound and bright. Faint marginal toning to leaves.
