Overall, a serviceable copy of the first edition. The Second Jungle Book features five stories about the now famous Mowgli plus three unrelated stories. The tales are set in India yet written in Vermont when Kipling was living there with his American wife, Caroline Balestier. Joseph Rudyard Kipling(1865 – 1936)[1]was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He was born in India, which inspired much of his work.Kipling's works of fiction includeThe Jungle Book(1894),Kim(1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888).[2]His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is seen as an innovator in the art of the short story.[3]His children's books are classics; one critic noted "a versatile and luminous narrative gift."[4][5] Kipling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was among the United Kingdom's most popular writers.[3]Henry Jamessaid, "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known."[3]In 1907, he was awarded theNobel Prize in Literature, as the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and at 41, its youngest recipient to date.[6]He was also sounded for the BritishPoet Laureateshipand several times for aknighthood, but declined both.[7]Following his death in 1936, his ashes were interred atPoets' Corner, part of the South Transept ofWestminster Abbey.Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed with the political and social climate of the age.[8][9]The contrasting views of him continued for much of the 20th century.[10][11]George Orwellsaw Kipling as "a jingo imperialist," who was "morally insensitive and aesthetically disgusting."[12]Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "[Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognised as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with." (Wikipedia)

Kipling, Rudyard. The Second Jungle Book.. Macmillan and Co., London, 1895.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Kipling's Second Jungle Book. Octavo, original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine and gilt vignette to the front panel, all edges gilt, pictorial title pages, illustrated. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Contemporary ownership inscription. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli, an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior, but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media, including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake.

The Second Jungle Book is a sequel to The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. KIPLING, Rudyard.. The Second Jungle Book.. London: Macmillan and Co., 1895, 1895.

Price: US$877.19 + shipping

Description: First edition in book form of the complementary volume to Kipling's best-known prose work. An immediate success on publication, The Jungle Book (1894) was followed by this title, which "completed the Mowgli saga with five stories that relate closely to those in the first book and that are essential to its emotional rounding-out" (Grolier). In 1907 the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Kipling "in consideration of the power of observation, originality of imagination, virility of ideas and remarkable talent for narration which characterize the creations of this world-famous author". He was the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the prize. Kipling's stories have had a long-standing hold on the public imagination and those included here were loosely adapted into the 1967 and 2016 Disney movies of the same name. Grolier Children's 100, 52. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt devices on spine and front cover, green-coated endpapers, edges gilt. Illustrations in the text by William Henry Drake, Paul Frenzeny, and the author's father John Lockwood Kipling. Slight rubbing at extremities, spine ends and one corner gently bumped, the binding otherwise bright and sound, faint foxing to contents. A very good copy with the blue and gilt covers still vibrant.

A HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION PUBLISHED IN AMERICA, THE SAME YEAR AS THE ENGLISH FIRST EDITION. These stories, of Mowgli, a human child lost in the jungles of India and raised by wild animals, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the white seal, Baloo and others struck a cord with readers who were able to find these exotic animals and people easy to relate to despite the bizarre circumstances and far off locales. Other animal stories in The Jungle Books range from the dramatic battle between good and evil in "Rikki-tikki-tav" to the macabre comedy, "The Undertakers." Price: US$4250.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Original publisher's cloth bindings with gilt to spines and boards. All edges gilt. Dark green endpapers. Book one Near Fine, book two just slightly less, but a well-matched set overall. Spines bright and unfaded, with just a bit of wear at the spine ends and corners. A few spots to the front cover of book one and the occasional spot of foxing throughout. Book 2 with heavier foxing at pages 208-09, obscuring a few words, and rear inner hinge splitting, but holding well. Overall, an attractive pair of Kipling's most memorable works. Housed in a custom clamshell box that is a little worse for wear. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller, their publication "caused even severe critics of [Kipling's] previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature, The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli, a human (man-cub) raised by wolves, as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity, he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these, Kipling became the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Near Fine.

KIPLING, Rudyard.. The Jungle Book; [together with] The Second Jungle Book.. London: Macmillan and Co., 1894 & 1895, 1895.

Price: US$4873.30 + shipping

Description: First English editions in book form: a notably fresh and internally bright set of Kipling's renowned duology, presented here in a handsome morocco binding. The Jungle Book and its sequel are rooted in the folk tales and legends that Kipling absorbed during his childhood in India. The Grolier Children's 100 notes that "the two sets of stories have rarely been united, despite the fact that the later book completed the Mowgli saga with five stories that relate closely to those in the first book and that are essential to its emotional rounding-out" (p. 192). The stories of the Jungle Book were originally published in periodicals in 1893 and 1894. Description: First editions in book form of Kipling's best-known classic of children's literature, attractively bound by the leading British bookbinder Riviere. Kipling won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907; he was the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the prize. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India, The Jungle Book was first published in periodicals in 1893 and 1894. An immediate success on publication, it was reprinted twice in 1894 and twice again the following year. "Kipling followed with The Second Jungle Book (1895), but the two sets of stories have rarely been united, despite the fact that the later book completed the Mowgli saga with five stories that relate closely to those in the first book and that are essential to its emotional rounding-out" (Grolier). Grolier Children's 100, 52; Martindell 61 & 63; Richards A76 & A85. 2 works, octavo (179 x 117 mm). Early 20th-century half vellum by Rivière, smooth spines tooled in gilt with elaborate floral design, green morocco labels, light blue cloth sides ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Tissue-guarded frontispiece to The Jungle Book, illustrations in the text of both volumes, by William Henry Drake, Paul Frenzeny, and the author's father John Lockwood Kipling. Armorial bookplates of British collector Howard Douglas Leonard Galton (1858-1923) on front pastedowns. Gilt bright, couple of tiny chips to spine labels, nick to a few initial leaves in vol. II, of which two neatly repaired. A very good set.
