Salman Rushdie. IS NOTHING SACRED. Granta Books, London, 1990.

Price: US$25.48 + shipping

Condition: As New

Description: This copy is staple bound in cream card covers with black titling. This book contains the essay that was delivered as the Herbert Read Memorial Lecture on 6th February 1990 In this essay on the spirit and the sacred, Rushdie examines the importance of language and literature in a secular, rationalist, materialist culture. He makes a case for literature as a privileged arena so that we can, "within the secrecy of our own heads . . . hear voices talking about everything in every possible way." On 14 February 1989 a fatwa ordering Rushdie's execution was proclaimed on Radio Tehran by Ayatollah Khomeini, the spiritual leader of Iran at the time, calling Rushdie's book 'Satanic Verses' "blasphemous against Islam". A bounty was offered for Rushdie's death, and he was thus forced to live under police protection for several years. On 7 March 1989, the United Kingdom and Iran broke diplomatic relations over the Rushdie controversy. Because this lecture was to be given less than one year later after the fatwa was issued the lecture was read by the playwright Harold Pinter. Ref JJ2
