Book has no marks or inscriptions; spine has a slight tilt, front board has some colour loss, and there is modest foxing on the text block. Wrapper has color loss on the spine and some toning on the reverse; else fine. A very good copy. Ralph Ellison s first novel won the National Book Award in 1953 and was named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century and TIME Magazine's 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005, calling it "the quintessential American picaresque of the 20th century."

Description: First U.K. edition in original, unclipped (15/- net), jacket in protective sheet. Weakening at front turn in corners and spotting to covers, remains brightly yellow. Red cloth over boards with gilded lettering on the spine. Slight lean, scuff to front, some dulling to gilding. Top edge and long edge with some spotting. In frequent marginal toning inside, otherwise clean and clear with no inscritptions, booksplates, or other markings. Pages:(8) 439 Dimensions:8 x 5½ x 1.

Description: The First UK printing published by Victor Gollancz in 1953. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with light pushing at the spine tips. The gilt titling remains bright. One or two very tiny spots to the text-block. Internally clean and appears unread. The fragile WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Mild edge wear at the spine tips with a little toning to the spine but far less than usually encountered. A 3 cm. closed tear to the lower front spine fold. Some light age related markings but the wrapper is in exceptional condition for its age. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover.
