Description: 1947. 204 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt lettering. Inscriptions to front pastedown and endpaper. Pages are lightly tanned and thumbed at the edges, with light foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards are a little rub worn, slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are mildly crushed. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Blue-green cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, green topstain: mild spine lean, spine color slightly faded and foxed, offsetting to endpapers, a few leaves with dog-ear creases, now mellowed, else, leaves crisp and binding tight. In the two-color illustrated dust jacket with price 7s 6d intact on the front flap; slight edge-wear and spine just a tad darkened. The author's first collection of short stories, winner of the inaugural Somerset Maugham Award for British writers under 30. Dust jacket artist Duncan Grant, a member of the Bloomsbury group and friend of publishers Leonard and Virginia Woolf, created a simple but dynamic illustration of diving body. Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.

Contemporary former owner gift inscription inked to the front free endpaper. Very good in very good Duncan Grant-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but lightly tanned at the spine panel, with just a touch of dust soiling to the rear panel and several tiny fractions of loss from the spine ends and corner tips. Eight stories, the author's first book, winner of the inaugural Somerset Maugham Prize.
