Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is one of the great artists associated with the Golden Age of Illustration. Thomas Ingoldsby was the pen name of Richard Harris Barhum (1788 - 1845) who was an English cleric of the Church of England and a novelist and humourous poet. A collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poems; deliberate humourous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry.

Description: William Heinemann: 2nd Edition, 4th Impression, 1920, hardcover, 20" x 8" x 1 1/2", a heavy book, 3/4 red leather over red cloth boards, red and black marbled endpapers, text black solid with top edge gilt, Illustrated by Arthur Rackham, the spine has five raised bands with title, author's name and illustrator's name in bright gilt, all tipped in plates and other illustrations accounted for. Shelf wear is apparent in terms of some rubbing down the length of the spine between the backstrap and front board; however, the hinges are tight. At the top of the verso of the FFEP is a mark in the shape of a paper clip which has partly transferred to the adjacent endpaper. All in all a remarkable copy of a 100 year old book In Very Good Plus to Near Fine condition. Potential buyers are asked to contact the seller as additional postage will be required.

Leather is supple, only rubbed in a few places, and spine with a very light fade. Top edge gilt. "To Vera" in faint early ink to front endpaper, and a bookseller's ticket to front pastedown in bottom inner corner. Text is clean, pages fresh. Binding is tight and square. All plates are present, all tipped in illustrations without damage or folded corners. A very attractive copy in almost near fine condition.
