Sendak, Maurice. In the Night Kitchen.. New York, Harper and Row, (1970)., 1970.

Price: US$35.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Cloth with dust jacket. Book very good, jacket spine panel torn at top to a depth of an inch or so. Rest of the jacket in good shape. The jacket is a second issue, bearing no price on the front inside flap; it is not price-clipped. Other than that, the jacket has the correct first edition markers, a code of 1070 on the front inside flap and the correct list of books on the back inside flap. An interesting feature of this copy is that, although the jacket has no price, there is a small price sticker on the back panel from the Doubleday Book Shop, one of several elegant shops on Fifth Avenue that were run by publishers in a bygone era. Hence, the book was sold in a retail store and is not a book club issue. The Doubleday shop closed in 1977.

Condition: Very Good

Description: Beloved picture book designed by Sendak as part of a "psychological trilogy,'' revisiting the world that children enter after they go to bed (with additional references to the Holocaust). Frequently banned by righteous zealots upset about depictions of the young protagonist's full front nudity. Unpaginated. A FIRST EDITION, very early, but post-1971 printing (with silver Caldecott Honor medal sticker to front DJ, but NO price to DJ, 7 titles to rear flap, not the later Anniversary Edition). Oversized (8.75" x 11.25") hardcover has cream-colored cloth-covered boards & decorative paper pastedown to front. Condition is VG, downgraded due to stain to the upper-outer corner of front cover, which carries over onto the same area on the DJ. Else, completely clean, binding strong & straight, pages white, colors bright. The unclipped DJ is also VG, downgraded due to that same stain & minor edgewear, a couple of tiny chips. Description: From the acclaimed author-artist Maurice Sendak comes a Caldecott Honor-winning tale of a fantastical dream world. This comic fantasy will delight readers of all ages with playful illustrations and an imaginative world only Sendak could create. In the Night Kitchen is the classic story of Mickey's adventures in the bakers' kitchen as they prepare our morning cake. "Milk in the batter! Milk in the batter! We bake cake and nothing's the matter!" the bakers sing. The bakers in the night kitchen need more milk for their batter, but then Mickey falls into the cake! They decide to put him in the oven anyway, but Mickey has different plans. He escapes in a plane made of bread dough and helps the bakers find the milk at last. "A celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency," proclaimed Children's Books and Their Creators. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. White linen boards and spine with appliqué illustration on front board with title and author. Unpaginated 4to. A young boy named Mickey sleeps in his bed when he is disturbed by noise on a lower floor. Suddenly, he begins to float, and loses all of his clothes as he drifts into a surreal world called the "Night Kitchen". He falls naked into a giant mixing pot that contains the batter for the "morning cake".When released in the early-1970s, Maurice Sendak's children's book, In the Night Kitchen, caused quite a stir for one particular reason: its protagonist — a young boy named Mickey — was drawn nude in some illustrations. Fearful of their children seeing an innocent picture of a fictional boy's genitals, some parents and librarians took the liberty of drawing nappies/diapers on Mickey (see above); others thought it easier to just burn the entire book. A clean pristine copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.

Sendak, Maurice. IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN. Harper & Row, New York, 1970.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Description: Later printing of the dreamland bedtime adventure and Caldecott Honor book, a Harper & Row file copy retained for their School Department Library. A surreal exploration of the vivid paths of children's minds as they drift to sleep, IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN is the philosophical sequel to WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE and continues that book's revolutionary focus on the inner emotional lives of children. Frequently banned for depicting its protagonist fully nude, IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN takes readers through a lush nonsense world featuring serenely inimical bakers and verses that mimic the rhythms of William Blake's verse. The book's comic-like aesthetic draws heavily from influences in the world of cartooning, most importantly Winsor McCay's early 20th-century comic LITTLE NEMO IN SLUMBERLAND, which Sendak called an "elaborate and audacious fantasy" - IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN is "in part, an homage to Winsor McCay" (Sendak's foreword to WINSOR MCCAY: His Life and Art). A Caldecott Honor book as elaborate and audacious as its influences. 11'' x 8.5''. Original color pictorial boards. In original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket, no Caldecott medal, but with shadow of removed Harper Crest sticker. Tan endpapers. Illustrated by Sendak in color throughout; lettering by Diana Blair. [40] pages. Publisher stamp: "Harper & Row / School Dept. Library" dated 1981 to title page. Jacket with a few short closed tears repaired with tape to verso, some areas of rubbing with color infill. Abrasion from bookplate removal to front fly leaf. Book with a touch of edgewear.

Description: First Edition, First Issue ($4.95 and 10/70 on the front flap and seven titles on the rear flap, no Caldecott sticker on the front cover of the jacket). Linen boards with pictorial cover label. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The cover edges are in very nice shape, no rubbing. No rubbing at the corners either. Bump at the rear bottom corner, also a little bumpiness of a few threads at the center of the rear cover, both imperfections quite minor (ask for photo, limited to five on the site). Mustard-colored inside covers and end papers, perfectly clean. Solidly bound book with nicely tight pages from cover to cover and nicely tight covers as well. Exceptionally clean, bright un-toned, pages. I didn't see any soiling at all. I didn't see any creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. The pages look unused. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The illustrations, it goes without saying, are terrific. They are also in terrific condition, no imperfections. The jacket presents quite nicely. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. I have provided three photographs so you can see everything that I see. The jacket is exceptionally clean. The wear is limited to several small surface scuffs. The flaps are perfectly clean. There is a little bit of crinkling at the rear top corner and off the front flap's bottom edge, both minor. As is the case with a number of other seller's jackets, the front flap's bottom corner is neatly clipped. The '1070' is across the way and unaffected. Under the $4.95 there is a small stamped 'M' and under it, also stamped, a small '51'. No idea what that refers to. From the book's Wikipedia profile: 'In the Night Kitchen is a children's picture book written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, first published in hardcover in 1970 by Harper and Row. The book depicts a young boy's dream journey through a surreal baker's kitchen where he assists in the creation of a cake to be ready by the morning. In the Night Kitchen has been described by Sendak as part of a trilogy of books based on psychological development from In the Night Kitchen (toddler) to Where the Wild Things Are (pre-school) to Outside Over There (pre-adolescent). It was a Caldecott Honor recipient in 1971. It was adapted into a five-minute animated short film on January 1, 1987, directed by Gene Deitch and released by Weston Woods. The book drew controversy in the US due to depictions of nudity. When Mickey (who looks to be about three years old) enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Critics object to Mickey's nudity which depicts not only his buttocks, but also his genitals. As a result, the book proved controversial in the United States on its release and has continued to be so. The inclusion of child nudity has been frequently raised as morally problematic. Consequently, this book remains on lists of books either challenged or banned.'

Description: In the Night Kitchen is a popular and controversial children's picture book, written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, and first published in 1970. The book depicts a young boy's dream journey through a surreal baker's kitchen where he assists in the creation of a cake to be ready by the morning. When the young boy [Mickey], (who looks to be about three years old) enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Critics object to Mickey's nudity which depicts not only his buttocks, but also his genitals. Some also interpret sexual innuendo in the events, with the nudity, free-flowing milky fluids, and giant (allegedly phallic) milk bottle. As a result, the book proved controversial in the United States on its release and has continued to be so. The inclusion of child nudity has been frequently raised as morally problematic; consequently, this book remains on lists of books either challenged or banned. The book has been ranked 25th place on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list compiled by the American Library Association. - Description & Condition: Dustjacket: The original dustjacket houses the book. There are quite a few closed edge tears round the extremities, and a few small chips to the top and bottom of the spine. There is a round white sticker at the bottom of the dustjacket which states: Caldecott Honor Book. There are seven titles of other Maurice Sendak books listed on the rear prelim. The dustjacket is now housed in a removable plastic archival sleeve for future protection. White linen, cloth boards with a mounted, decorative, circular illustration by Maurice Sendak, depicting Mickey with a milk bottle. The boards and illustration are in a very good and clean condition. The mustard coloured endpages [front and rear] are in a very good clean condition, as are the rest of the pages. Description: First edition of Sendak's classic work. Quarto, original cloth with illustrated paper cover label, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Nicholas Robertson Maurice Sendak Dec. 85." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Sendak's homage to New York City and the movies of the 1930s, In the Night Kitchen "spins the reader through the surreal fantasy of a child's dream, like Alice into Wonderland or Dorothy into Oz." Like most of Sendak's work, Kitchen is "a celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency" (Silvey, 586). Having received nine awards, The Night Kitchen's popularity is evident, but so is its controversy. When three-year-old protagonist Mickey enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Some critics have objected to Mickey's nudity, which is fully depicted, and others have interpreted sexual innuendo in the proceeding events. Consequently, the book's release in the United States sparked debate, with the inclusion of child nudity frequently noted as morally problematic. The book has been ranked 25th place on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list by the American Library Association.
