The author was "Late Chief of the Secret Service Division of the United States Treasury". Book begins with the author's service in the New Orleans area during the Civil War being what amounts to a spy for the North. He is hired into the Internal Revenue Service and eventually heads up the Secret Service. Tales of the Civil War in New Orleans. Tales of smuggling, counterfeiting, etc. Fascinating and quite scarce book. Light general wear; spine moderately darkened; previous owner name in pencil on the FFEP. A clean tight very nice copy.
