This is the UK first edition that is the true first edition and precedes the more common US first published by Scribner's. Henry Morton Stanley was the most successful and famous of all the Victorian era African explorers. This is his account of his Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886-1889. It was Stanley's final African adventure and the last of the great African explorations. Stanley's route to Emin was incredibly difficult. He ended up crossing Africa from west to east, starting at the mouth of the Congo River on the Atlantic Ocean and finishing at Zanzibar, an island in the Indian Ocean, just off the east coast. His extremely arduous route resulted in the death or desertion of two thirds of his followers. The route made little practical sense as a rescue operation and was chosen for political reasons. The conditions of the expedition were brutal. Stanley was forced to rely on Tippoo Tib, the notorious and powerful Arab-Swahili slave trader, for porters and temporary protection. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1001 pages

Condition: Good

Description: 2 volumes. pp. xv, 529; xv, 472, [2, publisher's advertisement]; one wood-engraved frontispiece and one in photogravure, both retaining tissue guards, 37 wood-engraved plates, 3 folding, colour-printed lithographic maps, one colour-printed lithographic geological profile, one folding letterpress table, and numerous wood-engraved illustrations (including maps and plans, a few full-page) in the text; slight foxing throughout both volumes, as usual, frontispiece of volume 2 missing corner and creased, front hinge cracked, small dent at bottom of back board, large folding map has short tear. Spines very slightly sunned and with mild edge-wear, consistent with the covers, these with very slightly bumped corners, a good set in reasonably well preserved original pictorial cloth. First edition of Stanley's famous account of his 1886-9 expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria who was supposedly besieged by Mahdist forces. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha (who proved resistant to being "rescued"), his abandonment of his own rear column, and his wider motives for his mission have all come into question then and since, but the book remains a classic of African exploration. It contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. In the course of the journey Stanley met Roger Casement, then in service on the Congo, discovered the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza, and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. Translations of In Darkest Africa appeared quickly in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch while sales of the English trade editions reached 150,000 copies. Howgego IV, S60.

The large fold-out maps in Volume II are: (i) A Map of the Routes of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition from the River Congo to the Victoria Nyanza, by Henry M. Stanley, and (ii) A Map of Emin Pasha's Province. In 1886, Stanley led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to "rescue" Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria in the southern Sudan. King Leopold II demanded that Stanley take the longer route, via the Congo River, hoping to acquire more territory and perhaps even Equatoria. After immense hardships and great loss of life, Stanley met Emin in 1888, charted the Ruwenzori Range and Lake Edward, and emerged from the interior with Emin and his surviving followers at the end of 1889. Stanley then travelled to Cairo, where he spent two months writing his famous account of the expedition, before finally returning to London in April 1890. Two volumes in Very Good conditions both rebound in fine matching bindings.

Price: US$877.19 + shipping

Description: First edition of Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan. This attractively illustrated work contains some of Stanley's most celebrated writing, especially the account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri Rainforest. On January 1887 Stanley left London, travelling to Congo by way of Zanzibar. Later in the same year, an advance party set off from Yambuya on a journey of over five months through the Ituri Rainforest. After the loss of 180 men, and "ravaged by the effects of disease, hunger, and warfare, Stanley and his team reached Lake Albert in December 1887. Failing to find Emin, they retreated to Ibwiri, where a camp was constructed. On 29 April 1888 Stanley himself finally met Emin Pasha, drinking champagne with him on the shores of Lake Albert, as he had with Livingstone at Ujiji in 1871" (ODNB). In the course of the journey, Stanley became the first European to discover the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, and the Mountains of the Moon. He also located a lake, which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza, in addition to a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. Translations of In Darkest Africa appeared quickly in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch while sales of the English trade editions reached 150,000 copies. Howgego IV, S60. 2 volumes, octavo. Original red pictorial cloth, spines and front covers lettered and illustrated in black and gilt, map endpapers in pale green. Frontispiece in each volume, 36 plates, 3 folding maps (2 colour), colour profile sketch, folding table of languages in vol. Contemporary ownership inscription on preliminary leaf in each volume, "W. Carter, Red House, Chantilly"; occasional pencilled marginalia in French. Cloth lightly mottled with edges rubbed, vol. II with neat repairs to inner hinges, and frontispiece tipped in, two maps with judicious repairs to verso with translucent tape. A very good copy with the gilt bright.

SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN UNUSUALLY FINE CONDITION AND ONE OF THE PRINCIPLE WRITINGS OF ONE OF THE GREATEST EXPLORERS OF THE DARK CONTINENT. "By 1885 Stanley had become deeply interested in the schemes of Mr. (afterwards Sir) William Mackinnon, chairman of the British India Steam Navigation Company, for establishing a British protectorate in East Equatorial Africa, and it was believed that this object could be furthered at the same time that relief was afforded to Emin Pasha, governor of the the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who had been isolated by the Mahdist rising of 1881-1885.Instead of choosing the direct route Stanley decided to go by way of the Congo, as thereby he would be able to render services to the infant Congo State, then encountering great difficulties with the Zanzibar Arabs established on the Upper Congo" (EB). Stanley and Tippoo Tib, the chief of the Congo Arabs, entered into an agreement for the latter to assume governorship of the Stanley Falls station and supply carriers for the Emin relief expedition, and then travelled up the Congo to Bangala together. They parted ways at Stanley Falls and Stanley started his trip toward Albert Nyanza, leaving a rear-guard at Yambuya on the lower Aruwimi under the command of Major E.M. Barttelot. Stanley’s journey to Albert Nyanza became a hazardous 160-day march through "nothing but miles and miles, endless miles of forest" that claimed the lives of over half of Stanley’s men from starvation, disease, and hostility of the natives. Finally upon the arrival at Albert Nyanza, Stanley achieved communication with Emin but was troubled by the non-arrival of his rear-guard. He retraced his steps back to Yambuya to find that Tippoo Tib had broken faith, Barttelot had been murdered, and the camp was in disarray and only one European was left. Stanley again set out for Albert Nyanza, where Stanley, Emin Pasha, and the survivors of the rear-guard began the return journey to Zanzibar by way of Uganda, a trip during which he discovered the Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori), traced the course of the Semliki River, discovered Albert Edward Nyanza and the great southwestern gulf of Victorian Nyanza. Of Stanley’s original 646 men, only 246 survived. This account of his adventures was wildly popular and published in six languages. One of the greatest feats in African travel, Stanley traveled thousands of miles in his claims to the great stretches of continental African territory.

STANLEY, Henry M.. IN DARKEST AFRICA Or The Quest Rescue And Retreat Of Emin Governor Of Equatoria.. Sampson Low & Co, 1890.

Price: US$1786.88 + shipping

Description: First edition. Two volumes. 8vo. Original brown pictorial cloth, decorated in gilt and printed in black and grey. A fine set, externally clean and very bright. Some spotting to the page edges, and internally. A couple of short closed tears to the maps, as often. Frontispiece and a colour folding map to each volume, with an additional folding map and coloured profile sketch to the second volume. Thirty-six black and white plates in total, with further illustrations in the text and map endpapers. Stanley's famous account of the Emin Pasha relief expedition to equatorial Sudan, a classic of African exploration. The relief mission was costly and harrowing, as Stanley's account shows, with the arduous four month passage through the Ituri forest alone claiming the lives of 180 of Stanley's men and "stand[ing] as one of the most gruelling and difficult journeys on record" (Howgego). Stanley compiled his account of the journey with the efficiency of a seasoned foreign correspondent, writing around twenty pages a day for fifty days at a hotel in Cairo. The resultant work secured his fame as an explorer and writer: "Stanley arrived [back] in England to a hero's welcome. His 'In Darkest Africa' was published in June that year, sold 150,000 copies and was immediately translated into six languages. Impresarios in countries as far afield as North America and Australia clamoured for Stanley's presence on the lecture circuits; he was given the freedom of five British cities and awarded honorary doctorates by Edinburgh, Oxford, Durham and Cambridge" (Howgego). Due to the great weight of the text, block copies in the original cloth, in nice condition and with sound hinges, are uncommon. Howgego IV S60

Description: Six volumes. tall quarto (10 by 12 inches), publisher's decorative cloth , uncut. Two steel-engraved portrait frontispieces, 3 folding maps (small professional repair to close the tear to map in volume 6), 38 plates & 6 etchings (signed by the artist), with numerous illustrations. The very scarce London subscriber's edition. Spines slightly faded but a beautiful near-fine set with bright decorative cover now housed in a custom red slipcase. Perhaps no adventurer is more closely connected with Africa than Lord Stanley, whose various expeditions did more to reveal the nature of that continent than any modern explorer. His 1887 mission to relieve the besieged governor of Egypt, his last mission to Africa, ended miserably when Stanley arrived only to learn that the governor did not care to be relieved, but instead was angry at the Englishman for interfering in his affairs. This account contains the harrowing details of Stanley's journey through the nearly impenetrable Ituri, or Great Congo, Forest, which he traversed not once but three times over the course of his travels. The conditions were brutal; sometimes the expedition could achieve no more than three or four hundred yards an hour. Along the way Stanley compiled important data on the Pygmies and discovered the Ruwenzori, or "Mountains of the Moon." The perilous journey nearly cost Stanley his life, and only a third of the men with whom he set out returned alive. Published in the same year as the more common trade issue. Hosken, 189.

Stanley's account of the 1886-1889 expedition he led to rescue Emin Pasha, Governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria, after his administration was overwhelmed during the Mahdist War. The expedition passed through the Belgian Congo, including a grueling five-month passage through the Ituri rain forest (the darkness of which inspired this book's title). Eventually they reached Emin, persuaded him to leave, and made their way to the eastern cost. In Darkest Africa was published soon after the conclusion of the expedition, initially to great acclaim. But as more information emerged from other participants, detailing high levels of death and brutality in the expedition, Stanley 's reputation suffered considerably. HOWGEGO IV S60.

This particular edition is extremely scarce in such excellent condition.
