Description: Hardcover, no dust jacket. Dark green cover has black and gold embossed on the front cover and spine. The cover has a slight amount of crushing on the top and bottom of the spine and very gently bumped tips to the boards. The front cover is pulling away from the body, but still attached. The pages show discoloration due to age, but are still very firmly attached. This book came with a pull-out map that is inside a self-contained sleeve of the back cover. The map is still present and in very fine condition. This book is in fine condition.

II repaired at gutter, minor scuffing), still VG- set. Second printing of this account of the attempt to rescue Emin Pasha, after destruction of General Gordon and his army at Khartoum in 1885. Actually, the relief army organized and influenced by the famed explorer missed the mark, and had to be rescued itself by the Emin Pasha. In 1892, Emin Pasha was killed by slave traders, further fueling the sale of this account.

Other folding map appears unopened. A very nice example of this popular set, which is often found quite worn.

Originally appearing in 1890, these two volumes comprise the fascinating account of Stanley’s brave and adventurous expedition to bring Emin Pasha to freedom. A better than very good set, the dark green cloth fresh with modest wear (as usual) at spine extremities but with the gilt titles and gilt author’s facsimile signature unusually fresh and splendidly bright, the set presents extremely well.
