Sir Henry Morton Stanley GCB (born John Rowlands; 28 January 1841 - 10 May 1904) was a Welsh-American explorer, journalist, soldier, colonial administrator, author and politician who was famous for his exploration of Central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Besides his discovery of Livingstone, he is mainly known for his search for the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers, the work he undertook as an agent of King Leopold II of the Belgians which enabled the occupation of the Congo Basin region, and his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1897, and served in Parliament as a Liberal Unionist member for Lambeth North from 1895 to 1900. More than a century after his death, Stanley's legacy remains the subject of enduring controversy. Although he personally had high regard for many of the native African people who accompanied him on his expeditions,  the exaggerated accounts of corporal punishment and brutality in his books fostered a public reputation as a hard-driving, cruel leader, in contrast to the supposedly more humanitarian Livingstone. His contemporary image in Britain also suffered from the inaccurate perception that he was American. In the 20th century, his reputation was also seriously damaged by his role in establishing the Congo Free State for King Leopold II. Nevertheless, he is recognized for his important contributions to Western knowledge of the geography of Central Africa and for his resolute opposition to the slave trade in East Africa.--wikipedia. "Sir Henry Morton Stanley, GCB (born John Rowlands) 1841 – 1904) was a Welsh journalist and explorer who was famous for his exploration of central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Upon finding Livingstone, Stanley reportedly asked, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Stanley is also known for his search for the source of the Nile, his work in enabling the plundering of the Congo Basin region in association with King Leopold II of Belgium, and his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1899." (Wikipedia) In Darkest Africa is the original report to the Emin Pasha Relief Committee and the funding group for the expedition, one of the most important of all African exploratory adventures. "By 1885 Stanley had become deeply interested in the schemes of Mr. (afterwards Sir) William Mackinnon, chairman of the British India Steam Navigation Company, for establishing a British protectorate in East Equatorial Africa, and it was believed that this object could be furthered at the same time that relief was afforded to Emin Pasha, governor of the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who had been isolated by the Mahdist rising of 1881-1885. Instead of choosing the direct route, Stanley decided to go by way of the Congo, as thereby he would be able to render services to the infant Congo State, then encountering great difficulties with the Zanzibar Arabs established on the Upper Congo" (EB). Stanley and Tippoo Tib, the chief of the Congo Arabs, entered into an agreement for the latter to assume governorship of the Stanley Falls station and supply carriers for the Emin relief expedition, and then travelled up the Congo to Bangala together. They parted ways at Stanley Falls and Stanley started his trip toward Albert Nyanza, leaving a rear-guard at Yambuya on the lower Aruwimi under the command of Major E.M. Barttelot. Stanley s journey to Albert Nyanza became a hazardous 160-day march through "nothing but miles and miles, endless miles of forest" that claimed the lives of over half of Stanley s men from starvation, disease, and hostility of the natives. Finally upon the arrival at Albert Nyanza, Stanley achieved communication with Emin but was troubled by the non-arrival of his rear-guard. He retraced his steps back to Yambuya to find that Tippoo Tib had broken faith, Barttelot had been murdered, and the camp was in disarray and only one European was left. Stanley again set out for Albert Nyanza, where Stanley, Emin Pasha, and the survivors of the rear-guard began the return journey to Zanzibar by way of Uganda, a trip during which he discovered the Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori), traced the course of the Semliki River, discovered Albert Edward Nyanza and the great southwestern gulf of Victorian Nyanza. Of Stanley s original 646 men, only 246 survived. This account of his adventures was wildly popular and published in six languages. One of the greatest feats in African travel, Stanley traveled thousands of miles in his claims to the great stretches of continental African territory. First Edition with the matching dates of 1890 on the title and copyright pages.

Description: First American Edition. With 2 steel engravings and 150 illustrations and maps. With three maps in pockets at back of each volume. 2 vols. 8vo. In Darkest Africa retells Stanley's adventures on his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, governor of the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who was cut off after the fall of Khartoum. A satisfactory copy of this classic of African exploration by the man who found Livingston. Original green pictorial cloth, gilt. A bit rubbed, hinges to vol. I starting; Map of the Great Forest Region in vol. I with several splits along folds, some old repairs along verso, no loss. Very good minus With 2 steel engravings and 150 illustrations and maps. Bookseller's ticket of the "Protective Association Publishers & Booksellers" to rear free endpaper of first volume. Stanley's account of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1888-1890, a mission undertaken in the service of King Leopold of Belgium - nominally to rescue Emin Pasha, governor of Equatoria, who by the mid-1880s had found himself isolated and under attack by Mahdist forcest; but with the tacit intent of annexing further territories in the ever-expanding Belgian colony of Congo. Long considered a classic, the work is depressing to read today, a document so rich in colonial self-regard that one is not surprised that the mission's less savory aspects, especially its indulgent attitude toward the Zanzibarian slaver Tippu Tip and the cruel treatment of native people by European members of Stanley's crew, go essentially unremarked. Still a key work of imperialist literature, handsomely produced, infrequently found in such nice condition.

In Darkest Africa retells Stanley's adventures on his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, governor of the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who was cut off after the fall of Khartoum. Published shortly after his return to England, Stanley relates the story of his expedition under-taken in March 1886 to relieve Emin Pasha, Governor of the Equatorial Province of Egypt, cut off after the fall of Khartoum. The expedition was carried out through the Congo and proved to be extremely arduous and long with the meeting with Emin Pasha not taking place until April 1888 on the shores of Lake Albert. Of the 646 men that started the expedition, 246 survived. Told with Stanley's dramatic narrative style, the book includes descriptions of the pygmy tribes of the Congo, the discovery of Mount Ruwenzori and Lake Elliot, and much zoological and botanical observations. An attractive set of a classic of African exploration.

Stanley and Emin entered Bagamoyo on their donkeys, some way ahead of their caravan, on 4 December, 1889. It was sensational news. Emin was safe, although the expedition to relieve him had cost the lives of at least 700 people. With the good journalist's facility for rapid reporting, Stanley began his account of the rescue at the Hotel Victoria, Cairo, on 25 January 1890, working on it continuously for fifty days at the rate of 20 printed pages per day. The first portion of the manuscript was delivered to the printer's on 12 March and the last proof sheet returned for printing by Clowes on 3 June. Hosken p. 189

Description: First American Edition. Hardcover. Includes approx. 44 full-page engravings (including frontispieces), approx 100 illustrations, and three color folded maps in pockets (two large, one small). "Henry Morton Stanley was a Welsh-American journalist and explorer who had made his name after ‘finding' Dr David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary and explorer who the western world had lost contact with while on an expedition to discover the source of the Nile. After ‘finding' Livingstone, Stanley continued to explore the African continent; between 1886 and 1890 he led theexpeditionfor therelief of Emin Pasha. In Darkest Africa (1890) is his account as leader of the controversial Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. The mission was plagued by violence, disease, high casualties and scandals involving Europeans members of the expedition." [British Library] Conversational in style and richly illustrated, Stanley tells the tale of the unsuccessful quest to rescue Emin Pasha. He led 400 armed men through the Congo and Ituri rain forest. Despite his failure, the book was well received and he was widely celebrated (and ultimately Knighted). There was some backlash, eventually, as some in the press suggested that the entire expedition was a thinly veiled effort to create new slave routes and pillaging ivory and the like. The library plate of the Dark Harbor Library (an affluent enclave on an island off the coast of Maine) indicates that the set was given to the library by "Mr. Player". Preston Player was a noted collector of books, maps and prints, and he and his mother had a cottage in Dark Harbor (he also owned a small island about 3 miles to sea). Dark Harbor occupies about 1/4 of the island and is largely occupied by summer 'cottages', the rest of the island is occupied by largely year-around residents. The owners of the 'cottagers' created the Dark Harbor library, separate from the public library on the island and the cottage families (largely Boston brahmin) donated books to be shared amongst themselves (there was also, for a period, a fund raised among them for buying new material. Light self/edge wear, small paper label near spine of both volumes, library book plate at front pastedown, "date loaned" label at rfep (blank), small Protect Association ticket at rfep, discrete notations at rear pastedown, else tight, bright, and unmarred; three folded maps in rear pockets show minor toning, very minor edge wear, a few small closed tears, else bright and clean. Green cloth bindings, gilt lettering and decorative elements, black ink decorative elements, brown endpages, pockets bound into both rear boards (containing maps). 8vo. xiv, [i], 547; xvi, 540pp. Illus. Description: 2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. xiv, 547; xvi, 540. 2 steel-engraved frontis. portraits & 4 maps (3 folding in rear pockets, 2 in colour). numerous text illus. (many full-page). contemporary half roan (a bit of wear to extremities & slight chipping or browning along some map edges). First Canadian Edition. Stanley organized and led the expedition, 1887-89, sent to rescue Emin Pasha at Wadelai on the left bank of the Nile. The German naturalist, whose real name was Eduard Schnitzer, had been appointed by Gordon to the governorship of the equatorial province, and was believed to be in grave danger following the fall of Khartoum. The route taken was from the west coast across the whole extent of the Congo State to the Nile, partly through dense tropical forest. Plagued by disease, hardship, mutiny, and poor organization, the expedition lost two-thirds of its original number, and Emin, who had reluctantly agreed to come away with Stanley, transferred himself to the German service, leaving Stanley to come home without him. Although he failed in his primary objective, Stanley made important geographical and ethnological discoveries. During the course of his journey he discovered the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, as well as a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza, and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. The treaties which he concluded with various native chiefs and transferred to Sir William Mackinnon’s company, laid the foundation of the British East Africa Protectorate. cfHosken p. 189.

Price: US$850.00 + shipping

Description: With 44 full-page engravings, including frontispieces, plus folded maps in pockets. Original dark green pictorial covers with gilt-stamped spine; a very good copy. First American edition. Controversial and dramatically illustrated, Stanley recounts the mission to rescue Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer) from his turbulent post as governor of Equatorial Sudan. Rising from obscure origins to become the famous explorer, Stanley was chosen to lead four hundred heavily armed men through the Congo and the Ituri rain forest. His troops suffered from disease and hunger, and many died on the journey, and Stanley was ultimately unsuccessful in bringing Emin back to the UK. Despite this failure, his work, In darkest Africa, became a best seller. At first Stanley was showered with awards and honorary degrees, and lectured extensively about his journey. This fame backfired, for the press began reporting accusations that the "rescue" was a front for establishing new slave routes and securing ivory. Stanley (1841-1904), born John Rowlands, was an illegitimate child raised in a Welsh workhouse. After fleeing to America, he was adopted by cotton trader Henry Hope Stanley and even fought for both the Confederate and Union armies during the Civil War. Journalism enabled him to travel across America, Turkey, and Africa, where he eventually made his name by locating the missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Most famous for his explorations of the African continent, Stanley was revered as a romantic explorer despite also being known for his cruelty and disregard of African natives.

"By 1885 Stanley had become deeply interested in the schemes of Mr. (afterwards Sir) William Mackinnon, chairman of the British India Steam Navigation Company, for establishing a British protectorate in East Equatorial Africa, and it was believed that this object could be furthered at the same time that relief was afforded to Emin Pasha, governor of the the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who had been isolated by the Mahdist rising of 1881-1885.Instead of choosing the direct route Stanley decided to go by way of the Congo, as thereby he would be able to render services to the infant Congo State, then encountering great difficulties with the Zanzibar Arabs established on the Upper Congo" (EB). Barttelot. Stanley’s journey to Albert Nyanza became a hazardous 160-day march through "nothing but miles and miles, endless miles of forest" that claimed the lives of over half of Stanley’s men from starvation, disease, and hostility of the natives. Of Stanley’s original 646 men, only 246 survived. This account of his adventures was wildly popular and published in six languages. This particular edition is extremely scarce in such excellent condition.

Description: STANLEY, Henry M. In Darkest Africa or the Quest, Rescue and Retreat of Emin Governor of Equatoria. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. Two volumes. Large thick quarto (10 by 12 inches), publisher's three-quarter dark brown morocco, raised bands, vellum boards, top edges gilt, uncut. $15,000.Deluxe signed limited first edition, American issue, number 39 of only 250 copies signed by Stanley, of the classic 19th-century account of African exploration. Profusely illustrated with engraved frontispieces, 38 mounted plates on India paper, six additional full-page etchings (each signed by the artist), three color folding maps (two backed in cloth), a folding table of comparative vocabularies, and numerous mounted, in-text India-prints.Perhaps no adventurer is more closely connected with Africa than Lord Stanley, whose various expeditions did more to reveal the nature of that continent than any modern explorer. His 1887 mission to relieve the besieged governor of Egypt, his last mission to Africa, ended miserably when Stanley arrived only to learn that the governor did not care to be relieved, but instead was angry at the Englishman for interfering in his affairs. This account contains the harrowing details of Stanley's journey through the nearly impenetrable Ituri, or Great Congo, Forest, which he traversed not once but three times over the course of his travels. The conditions were brutal; sometimes the expedition could achieve no more than three or four hundred yards an hour. Along the way Stanley compiled important data on the Pygmies and discovered the Ruwenzori, or "Mountains of the Moon." The perilous journey nearly cost Stanley his life, and only a third of the men with whom he set out returned alive. Published in the same year and using the same sheets as the English issue (also limited to 250 copies). Hosken, 189. Text and plates generally clean and fine, bindings mildly toned. An extremely good, handsome copy of the scarce deluxe signed edition.
