McEwan, Ian. In Between the Sheets. Jonathan Cape Ltd, 1978.

Price: US$129.95 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: This is a very good/near fine copy of McEwan's second published book, a further title from his 'Ian Macabre' period. The book (as a physical object) has survived its first forty five years pretty well albeit with some small signs of dilapidation: although the black cloth-bound boards are generally clean, evenly coloured and unmarked, there is a little dent on the top edge of the front cover. Other than that all edges are straight and all corners sharp. The text block is square and tightly bound but there is some faint spotting on the top edge. Internally, all of the pages and end paper are spotless with the single exception of the ffep where there is a previous resale price and a note to the effect that the book is a 1st edition, both written in pencil. The dust jacket retains much of its original gloss and crispness, the colours of the its artwork and lettering are still strong and distinct with no fading and there are no tears or excisions (the original publisher's price, £3.50, is still in place). However, the bottom right corner of the front panel is disfigured by some prominent creasing and there are some tiny nicks on the fold edges of the fold-in flaps. Please see five photos of this book (the maximum number facilitated by Abe) and you would of course be welcome to ask for more if that would help.

McEWAN, Ian. The Cement Garden [Signed]. Jonathan Cape, London, 1978.

Price: US$465.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: First Impression of McEwan's first novel (preceded by two short story collections: First Love, Last Rites and In Between the Sheets). 8vo: 138pp. Publisher's forest green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, grey end papers, illustrated dust jacket priced £3.50. Signed by the author without inscription on the title page. A superlative copy (apparently unread), virtually pristine. Filmed by Andrew Birkin in 1993, with Charlotte Gainsbourg and Andrew Robertson. The story "concerns a family of abandoned children coming to terms with life without their parents. It is about their simultaneous growth into adults and regression as children . . . [and] brings to mind many other novels concerned with children isolated from adults, most notably The Lord of the Flies. But where Golding's children run wild, and the reader is reminded of how the adult world provides checks on their natural aggression, McEwan's grow closer, and the reader is reminded of how the adult world provides checks on their natural sexuality." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
