Description: Number 54 of 300 copies, signed by the author on the limitation page. Near fine in handsome gold slip case. Eleven essays on art; Updike writes in the introduction: ""Seven essays in all [on art] were published before the ambitiously elegant magazine (Réalités), not surprisingly, cut its losses and folded. The March-April issue of 1981, containing my thoughts on the hand of Saint-Saens, was the last. Essays on a Diebenkorn painting and a pairing by Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent were left unrun; to these nine pieces I have added, to form this little book, an essay upon a Vermeer written for Horizon, and a review of a Fairfield Porter exhibition that The New Republic elicited from me."
