"The Paris-based Greek publisher, Tériades (Stratis Eleftheriadis) - renowned for making deluxe books with such artists as Matisse, Miró and Léger, and for his magazines Minotaur and Vervehad planned a book with Henri Cartier-Bresson in the late 1930s. The war intervened, and following the photographer's successful retrospective show at MoMA in 1947, Tériades eventually published Images à la sauvette in 1952or as it was happily retitled for its American co-edition (published the same year) The Decisive Moment. [It] is one of the greatest of all photobooks" (Parr & Badger). Parr & Badger I, 208-9; Roth p. 134. Folio. Original wrap-a-round lithographic boards by Matisse, lettering to spines and covers in black. No dust jacket issued. 126 mostly full page monochrome photographs. A very good copy of this vulnerable publication, boards a touch sunned, corners lightly bumped, but overall a bright copy.
