No other specimens are known to exist in this condition. This magnificent presentation is a true reproduction of Edmund Lear's original work, created in 1832, and is comprised of 42 hand colored lithographed plates. Each plate of the folio format superbly depicts a member of the family of parrots. Edward Lear (1812-1888) was a brilliant artist, but only his early creative years were devoted to painting birds. His monograph of the parrots reflects his artistic talent and remains one of the most prized illustrated works of the 19th century. This was the first time that an illustrated ornithological work was entirely devoted to one family of birds, and was the first book of lithographed plates of birds published in England in folio format. Many of the sketches were made from parrots in the Zoological Gardens at Regent's Park (near to Lear's home), while others were done from parrots in private collections. Lear transferred the designs to lithographic stones which were then printed off by Hullmandel, colored by hand, and sent to the original subscribers. Lear's Parrots is without doubt the finest and most comprehensive work on this family of Birds. Lear uses color in a fantastic (in the original sense) manner to convey the beauty of these birds. "The toucans, with their enormous beaks, have gone in for unimaginable transformations of their basic colors; their eyes, even, vary from bright blue to red. The beaks can be black, with an upper edge of pale straw yellow, or the beak is crimson red with a black dividing line, but sometimes the bill is green, olive green; or the lower bill a bright blue with green shadings."
