Description: States "Published October 19, 1964 / Reprinted, November 1964 / Third Printing, December 1964." So, obviously, the third printing. Not price clipped; original $4.95 price showing. Coded "10/64" to bottom of jacket front flap. No ISBN appearing, of course, since ISBNs did not come into common use until about 1970. "Good-plus" jacket with some modest chipping to head & heel of spine and some white gaps as large as half-an-inch in the jacket emulsion also near heel of spine, possibly from a sticker pull, or possibly the beginnings of some (long ago) insect predation. Additionally, some neatly typed sheets of thin white paper ("onionskin") have been attached to both front and rear pastedowns, the sheets at rear bearing the twice-a-month schedule of meetings of the "Edwin Fuller Book Club," scheduled to read 10 or more novels by North Carolina authors from September, 1965, to May, 1966, including works of "Thomas Wolf," Inglis Fletcher, Carl Sandburg, and Frank Slaughter. The single sheet attacked to FRONT pastedown, meantime, lists 15 novels to be read on a similar schedule, though these are less geographically restricted, to include Kaufman's "Up the Down Stairs"; Hersey's "White Lotus"; "Michner's" "The Source"; DuMaurier's "The Flight of the Falcon," and (last on the list) Tyler's "If Morning Ever Comes," that title (here in hand) to be dealt with by the reading group on April 12,1966. The author's first novel, published when she was 22 years old. 266 pp. Reduced from $95.

Boards faded along edges and tugged at head of spine, with a few stray smudges. Spine a bit cocked. Abrasions to front endpapers from removed bookplates -- possibly a library card pocket, though the book lacks any other library stamps or markings to suggest a former institutional life. Toning to pastedowns. Binding is generally shaken and opens easily between gatherings, but is holding. Scattered foxing and a couple dog-eared pages, else interior clean and unmarked. Description: An important First Edition (so stated) of Anne Tyler's first book, signed by the author who was only 22 years old when she wrote this first book. In grey and black cloth and boards and grey dustjacket. The book is quite clean and bright inside but there are two pinprick-size blemishes on the top edge, the top edges appear light pink (very slightly faded perhaps), there is light fading around the edges of the front cover and a narrow top strip of fading on the back cover top and fore-edges. The dustjacket is wonderful, complete and quite stiff still; the price of $4.95 is intact and the date "10/64" appears on the bottom of the front flap. A lovely copy by an important author. By the author of "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant," "Saint Maybe," "Breathing Lessons," and "The Accidental Tourist." In fantastic condition for the collector's library. "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant," "The Accidental Tourist," and "Breathing Lessons" were all finalists for the Pulitzer Prize, with "Breathing Lessons" winning in 1989. A creative story teller since her earliest memories, Tyler consumed fiction including the brilliant Gabriel Garcia Marquez and talented Eudora Welty. She refers to Welty as her "crowning influence" and references "The Wide Net and Other Stories" as a favorite into adulthood. Welty's literary realism had an impact on Tyler's own "every day events" as literary themes. Her favorite novel as a child was Virginia Lee Burton's "The Little House," which itself appears in "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant." In interviews, Tyler recounts reading "Little Women" over 20 times a young girl. A fascinating individual and writer, Tyler has written over 20 books, with her most recent publications being "Redhead by the Side of the Road" and "French Braid."
