He chose classical and mythological themes for his epic poems, particularly the legends of Ulysses and King Arthur. His ldylls of the King, first published in 1859, inspired the Pre-Raphaelite artist Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale (1872-1945) to paint a series of oils notable for their etherial quality as well as for their details from the natural world. Ms. Brickdale was part of the Croydon artistic society that included G.F. Watts, John William Waterhouse, John Everett Millais and Byam Shaw, all of whom also painted from Arthurian legends. Three editions of Idylls of the King were produced in 1911: this edition including Canadian imprint, with 21 plates; another edition with twelve plates; and a deluxe, limited edition of 350 copies, signed and numbered.
