The Poem 'Elaine' is part of the cycle of twelve Poems 'Idylls of the King' by Alfred Tennyson. Published between 1859 and 1885 it retells the legend of King Arthur and his knights. This large size book is an early edition from 1868 and has nine full page illustrations by the famous illustrator Gustave Doré. Wonderful, if you are a fan of Lord Tennyson's poems, illustrated books and knights and Maidens. Book is in good to very good condition regarding the age. Gilt text block edges and the blue cloth is richly decorated with gilt ornamental work and gilt text on spine and front board. Illustrations are protected by tissue papers (complete). Some external wear, rubbing and tears (esp. spine ends and board corners, see photos). Some spotting/staining to few pages otherwise clean and bright.

Description: Enid, Vivien, Elaine, and Guinevere : the four parts in one volume, each with half title, dated title page, and list of illustrations. 107, 49, 84, 41 pages; with frontispiece, and the 36 plates as called for. Impressive unrestored sound contemporary binding (Dickers & Son, London), with marbled endpapers, and edges gilt; joints and edges rubbed. Very light peripheral foxing to a few leaves of text, and to lowest inch of bottom margin of Guinevere plates (more pronounced on the final four leaves of text, and worse on blank rear endpapers). Light rippling to lower third of leaves throughout, with tideline verso to later plates - in a few instances a faint tideline is present to the right margin of a plate (see last photo). Overall a lovely example. 17 x 12.6 inches.
