Description: Through imaginary letters and documents, which are cunningly revealing and follow a narrative pattern, all Rome comes crowding through these pages. Romans of the slums, Romans of the palaces, Romans in the Alban villas, brawling youth in their athletic clubs, noble ladies serving the gods in their temples, dissolute women plotting assignations, spies and assassins stalking the Dictator into his very chamber- all hailing Caesar or hating him. High above them Caesar reflects on his mastery of the world and man's relation to liberty, to responsibility, to the passions, to history: he, Caesar, who wrote an edict abolishing the state religion and promptly destroyed it; he, Caesar, who succumbed as he had several years before to the charms of Cleopatra when she came in state to Rome; he, Caesar, who revered Catullus the poet though he wrote venomously of Caesar while lauding Clodia Pulcher, the gaudiest and wittiest woman in Rome. In the meantime the fatal Ides are drawing near and Caesar sees death approaching while around him the patterns of life are constantly shifting. There is the night when Cleopatra lights up the skies over Rome with Egyptian pomp, the night when Caesar surprises her in the arms of Marc Antony. On that night the incomparable Cytheris knows that her day as Antony's mistress is done. Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng

Price: US$20.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1948. First Edition. Cloth, This is Wilder's first novel after his string of big hits, and instant classics, on Broadway. Like the plays, though, Wilder is venturesome in approach, here embracing the hoary form of the epistolatory novel but applying it in a highly original manner. As the title might suggest, this novel is a retelling of the story of Julius Caesar, his times and the society he occupied and dominated. Wilder might not be strongly associated with historical fiction, but he was in fact a devoted classicist, and this foray into historical fiction found a receptive audience -- the novel sold extremely well upon its publication. Deservedly, one might add. Being a virtuosos stylist, Wilder avoids the stiltedness that afflicts so many attempts to capture Ancient Rome, and this work deserves to be placed alongside the two modern classics of Robert Graves who depicted a slightly later phase of Roman history. The dust jacket has minor chips and wear along the edges, tight clean binding, not price clipped, not remaindered, not ex-library, no markings, no tears.

Description: " A brilliant epistolary novel set in Julius Caesar's Rome. Thornton Wilder called it "a fantasia on certain events and persons of the last days of the Roman republic." Through vividly imagined letters and documents, Wilder brings to life a dramatic period of world history and one of history's most magnetic, elusive personalities. In this inventive narrative, the Caesar of history becomes Caesar the human being. Wilder also resurrects the controversial figures surrounding Caesar -- Cleopatra, Catullus, Cicero, and others. All Rome comes crowding through these pages -- the Rome of villas and slums, beautiful women and brawling youths, spies and assassins.Novel about the death of Julius Caesar.246p. Name of previous owner scratched out on front past-down. Crisp copy with slightly scuffed spine.

Description: VIII, 246 Seiten. Guter Zustand. Besitzername auf dem Vorsatz. - Thornton Niven Wilder (* 17. April 1897 in Madison, Wisconsin; † 7. Den dritten Pulitzer-Preis brachte Wilder sein Stück The Skin of Our Teeth ein. Dezember 1975 in Hamden (Connecticut). Dort ist er auf dem Mount Carmel Cemetery begraben. Description: This is Wilder's first novel after his string of big hits, and instant classics, on Broadway. Like the plays, though, Wilder is venturesome in approach, here embracing the hoary form of the epistolatory novel but applying it in a highly original manner. As the title might suggest, this novel is a retellng of the story of Julius Caesar, his times and the society he occupied and dominated. Wilder might not be strongly associated with historical fiction, but he was in fact a devoted classicist, and this foray into historical fiction found a receptive audience -- the novel sold extremely well upon its publication. Deservedly, one might add. Being a virtuosic stylist, Wilder avoids the stiltedness that afflicts so many attempts to capture Ancient Rome, and this work deserves to be placed alongside the two modern classics of Robert Graves who depicted a slightly later phase of Roman history. The dust jacket has minor chips and wear along the edges, now fully protected with mylar. The morocco on the slipcase's spine is lightly sunned. The case is otherwise solid and attractive, and with the chemise fully protects the first edtion copy. Cloth, with Quarter Morocco Slipcase and Chemise

The original and rare press-photograph is titled on the back and the story of the picture is told: (Translates:) ".Thornton Wilder arrived on the 11th of September 1957 on the airport in Frankfurt. On August 6th 1957 he received the "Peace-price of the german Bookseller Association in the Paulskirche [Frankfurt]". The Ides of March is an epistolary novel by Thornton Wilder that was published in 1948. It is, in the author's words, 'a fantasia on certain events and persons of the last days of the Roman republic. Historical reconstruction is not among the primary aims of this work'. The novel deals with the characters and events leading to, and culminating in, the assassination of Julius Caesar. American publisher Bennett Cerf remarked at that year's meeting of the American Booksellers Association that there had been "only three novels published since the first of the year that were worth reading . Cry, The Beloved Country, The Ides of March, and The Naked and the Dead. Wilder himself once wrote that the book was "a kind of crossword puzzle" that "only begins to speak at its second reading." Edmund Fuller called the novel "a text so rich that it requires exploration rather than reading." The novel is divided into four books, each of which starts earlier and ends later than the previous book. Catullus' poems and the closing section by Suetonius are the only documents of the book which are not imagined; however, many of the events are historical, such as Cleopatra's visit to Rome. Though the novel describes events leading up to Caesar's assassination on 15 March 44 BC a number of earlier events are described as if they were contemporary. Thus, the violation of the Bona Dea mysteries by Publius Clodius Pulcher, Caesar's subsequent divorce of his second wife Pompeia, and the circulation of two poems by Catullus suggesting that Caesar and his engineer, Mamurra, were lovers (and Catallus's subsequent apology) are transposed from December 62 BC to December 45 BC. In addition, many of the characters depicted as living in the novel were actually dead by 44 BC, including M. Porcius Cato (in 46 BC), Catullus (in c. 54 BC), Julia Marcia (in 69 BC) and Clodius (in 52 BC). (Wikipedia) Sprache: english.

Also included is a autographed letter signed (ALS), handwritten on note paper, that was mailed to Miss Elena Hellbranth, envelope is postmarked New Haven, Conn; Apr. 20 1946. The autographed handwritten letter has the letterhead, "50 Deepwood Drive, Hamden 14. Connecticut," and the letter states, "April 20-1946, Dear Miss Hellebranth, Many thanks for thinking of me in reference to Ned Sheldon's death. All his friends , too, are writing one another in dismay and grief at his death. I remember with much pleasure the congenial evening at Miss Taylor's home and the drive home with yourself and your sister. Many thanks again for your expressive letter, Sincerely Yours, Thornton Wilder." ALSO included are newspaper clippings on "The Ides of March," some of which are, 1) NY Times, Feb. 18, 1948, announcing books that were published on that day, 2) NY Times full front page, section 2, March 25, 1962, written by Lewis Funke about Jerome Kilty's dramatization of Thornton Wilder's "Ides of March." Bertha de Hellebranth and her sister Elena were born into a cultured upper-class family in Budapest, Bertha in 1899, Elena in 1897. Their father was a lawyer and their mother a student of Franz Liszt’s last living pupil. Both sisters showed artistic potential early, beginning to paint at four or five years of age. Their parents encouraged them, and had the means to send them to the best art schools of the time. They studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Budapest, at the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and painted portraits of European nobility. As Patricia Fazekas points out, "Growing up in a family of privilege, they seemed to have unusual access to many illustrious people." So we should not be surprised to find among their subjects members of high society, such as Count Andrássy Gyula, the Russian-born Princess Baby Galitzine, and Admiral Horthy Miklós, the Regent. Later on, their subjects included American heiress Gladys Vanderbilt (Countess László Széchenyi), President Theodore Roosevelt’s granddaughter Paulina Longworth and former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. From the mid-thirties until World War II, Bertha and Elena divided their time between their home in Budapest and a home on the ocean at Ventnor, NJ (the next city over from Atlatnic City, NJ). In 1925, they showed their work at the Nemzeti Szalon in Budapest, and in 1926, they had a joint exhibition of their portraits in the US. Both exhibited their work at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and most major museums and galleries in the US. Bertha also had exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both Bertha and Elena were Fellows of the Royal Society of Art (London), and garnered numerous prizes. Bertha was awarded First Prize by the National Academy of the American Water Color Society one year, and the Grand Prize of the Audubon Society. She was one of the founders of the now defunct World League of Hungarian Artists Abroad (Külföldi Magyar Képzomuvészek Világszövetsége), and received a Gold Medal from the Cleveland Árpád Akadémia in 1963. (Elena also received the Akadémia’s gold medal in 1965.) Their work is found in museums and galleries too numerous to mention. Elena settled in Atlantic City, NJ. Neither she nor Bertha married. We do know that Bertha died at age 81, in December of 1980. Elena outlived her by eight years, dying in February 1988, at age 91. Much of their work from the 1920’s through the 1940’s was donated by their sister-in-law in her will to the American Hungarian Foundation in 2001. Museum exhibition records indicate that they continued to paint, sculpt and show their work throughout the 1950’s and 60’s and perhaps even longer," wrote Patricia Fazekas. But no samples of their later works were found in their home, leaving us to guess whether their style or subject matter had changed. Thus the de Hellebranth sisters remain a partial enigma to this day. Book has general shelf wear, slightly rubbed extremities, slightly cocked spine, a 1.5" X 2.5" bookplate on front endpage, somewhat age-toned endpages, good binding, clean and unmarked. States first edition M-W on copyright page. DATE PUBLISHED: 1948 EDITION: FIRST ED 246
