Title block & illustration stamped in gilt on front cover and spine. Jacket is long since lost. Moderate edge wear, spotting to boards, some age discoloration, and the spine hinge on the front panel is frayed along half its length. Gilt edge tinting to top of book block, fore and bottom edges are untrimmed. Binding is square and strong. Previous owner's book plate and gift inscription, dated Christmas 1907, on half title page. Printed plates are unfaded, and colours remain vibrant. Pages are otherwise gently age toned but clean and unmarked.

This is the second edition of the Arthur Rackham book, The Ingoldsby Legends, which was published by J.M. Dent & Co, London in 1907, the first edition was issued in 1898 and this enlarged revised edition was not published until 1907. This is a very attractive example of the early Arthur Rackham illustrated book, The Ingoldsby Legends is widely regarded as one of the most collectable of the Golden Age illustrators. In a prefatory note by the artist the revisions and details or re-drawing are explained and the text was also completely reset for this edition. The original green boards which are embossed in gilt decoration by the artist to the front board and spine; and gilt letters to the front and spine are in very good condition condition, with slight edge wear and knocks to the top and bottom of the spine. This first edition book has all twenty four printed colour illustrations, as issued and as per the list to the front of the book. Additionally, there are 90 black and white illustrations and vignettes by Rackham that run throughout the book There are 550 numbered pages, all top edge gilt and remaining edges untrimmed, with green endpapers to the front and back. There is some typical foxing to the title page tissue guard otherwise the text blocck and illustrations are fine. The pages are in overall very Good condition. A dustwrapper is not present. Description: A good to very good copy of this classic work with 24 colour plates, 12 tinted plates and numerous illustrations by Arthur Rackham. 1st edition thus. Rackham first illustrated Ingoldsby Legends in 1898 using a smaller format and without tipped in colour plates. He revisited the work in 1907 adding plates and redrawing some of the other illustrations. The subject matter, including as it does witches, spectres, knights and monks (and a finally repentant Jackdaw), is well suited to Rackham's style. The decorative binding is in clean and tight condition with slight pulling to the spine and a very small bump to the bottom corner of the back board. There is some light ink marking, more prevalent on the back board but with a few spots to the front. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. Internally the dark green decorative endpapers are present without mark. There is an inscription to the half title. Contents are complete, clean and in very good condition. There is a small crease to the frontispiece plate and a small nick out of the bottom edge of p xiii. There is occasional light foxing - to the half title; the tissue guard to the frontispiece and in the gutter of the tinted plates. There is some spotting at the untrimmed page edges. Bookplate of Cecil E. Byas affixed to front endpaper. Complete with twenty-four full page colored plates (including frontispiece), twelve printed tints, and multiple in-text black and white illustrations all by Rackham. Total of 560 copies of the large paper edition have been printed, with 500 for sale in England and 50 for sale in America, this being number 213. Signed by the illustrator on the limitation page. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase. (Latimore and Haskell 30) (Riall 83). This copy is from the library of Cecil Edward Byas (1865-1938) of Hampstead, England, who collected books and art pieces that have since been donated to various institutions. Most notably, Byas bequeathed a large collection of stone carvings and porcelain sculptures to The Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge.

Description: Signed limited edition, number 377 of 560 copies signed by Rackham, one of 500 for sale in England. Rackham's previous illustrated edition of The Ingoldsby Legends, published in 1898, had no deluxe signed issue. For this edition, it was revised and largely redrawn, so that "greater prominence could be given to the illustrations by better and larger reproductions, including a greater number of illustrations in colour" (Prefatory Note). These popular tales, which were purportedly based on the author's discovery of old documents, were in fact mostly reworkings of known narrative sources such as Kentish myth and Sir Walter Scott. Thomas Ingoldsby was the pseudonym of Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), whose "knowledge of such areas as heraldry and witchcraft also lends a degree of authenticity to the Legends" (ODNB). Initially appearing in the serial Bentley's Miscellany in 1837, the tales were first published in book form in 1840 and inspired numerous illustrators. Latimore & Haskell, pp. 30-31; Riall, p. 83. Morocco a little dulled, very light toning to contents, light marking to initial few pages, a few tissue-guards and plates a little creased. A very good copy.

Vellum covers with gilt decoration to the front and spine, top edge gilt, rest untrimmed, pictorial endpapers, colour frontis plus a further 23 colour tipped in plates with titled tissue guards, 12 tinted plates, many more black and white illustrations throughout. xix+549 pages, 29x23cm. Original vellum covers are clean and bright, the binding is square and secure, missing silk ties, very slightly splayed at the edges. Pages age toned, a few small spots to the prelims, a very rare minor mark, but generally smart, clean, and tidy. A lovely book in very good + condition.
