Very slight bumping to corners and to head & tail of spine. Very sound binding and very clean internally. Some marking to a small number of pages (pp 30, 47 58, 109 & 295) - a couple of these look like grubby little finger marks. It looks as if the heads of pp 336 & 337 had adhered together slightly at some time as there is some slight surface abrasion as if the pages have had to be separated, but this is minor in nature. Very faint tendency to tanning to a narrow border around some oage edges. Endpapers slightly tanned. Dust jacket condition: good. Unclipped jacket with some wear around the edges. Small amount of loss to tail of spine together with a closed tear that extends upwards by approx 5cms and then horizontally to about three quarters of the spine width. Some rubbing and chipping - mainly to lower edges and especially the back. Jacket in a protective wrapper. The book also comes with a slipcase which is in fair condition. It is sound but is a little grubby and chipped here and there. This is a companion to the Howard Pyle's famous Book of Pirates. First Trade Edition, First Printing. Howard Pyle was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. He founded his own school of art and illustration, named the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The scholar Henry C. Pitz later used the term Brandywine School for the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region, several of whom had studied with Pyle. Some of his more notable students were N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ethel Franklin Betts, Anna Whelan Betts, Harvey Dunn, Clyde O. DeLand, Philip R. Goodwin, Violet Oakley, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Olive Rush, Allen Tupper True, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Jessie Willcox Smith. He is also well known for his illustrations of pirates, and is credited with creating what has become the modern stereotype of pirate dress. He published his first novel, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas Magazine. His novel Men of Iron was adapted as the movie The Black Shield of Falworth (1954).
