Norman Douglas. How About Europe? Some Footnotes on East and West -SIGNED. Privately printed, Florence, 1929.

Price: US$1169.59 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: How About Europe? Signed by the author. Together with two handwritten letters related to the copy signed by Douglas. Association copy. First Limited Edition, No.222 of 550 copies privately printed in Florence by Tipografia Classica.8vo.pp.217. This copy is also dedicated, signed and dated, by Norman Douglas on the Half Title page to Frank Crosslé. What makes this copy particularly special is a slipped in envelope addressed to Francis Crosslé containing two handwritten signed letters from Norman Douglas. The first letter, dated 19th Feb.1930, concerns Crosslé's order of a copy of 'How About Europe?" and states that it ( presumably this copy) was despatched to him on 15th January, mentioning that "the edition is now sold out." He then suggests a possible purchase of the deluxe edition of his next book which "I don't think can be out before the 15-20 April". This is likely to refer to 'Capri - Materials for a description of the island' , published in 1930. Another title, 'Paneros" also published in 1930 , did not appear until November. He also sends his love to the Australian writer and artist Norman Lindsay. The second letter, dated 23 Feb, says that he has not yet received the cabled money for the book , but that Orioli (his publisher in Florence) has set aside a copy for him. "I should write more but I have to leave Florence in 35 minutes". Near Fine in Florentine paper covered boards with a geometric design in blue, gold and cream. One small area at the top of the spine where there has been offsetting from the pink d.j. A little scattered faint foxing but the pages and text are clear and bright. Corners slightly bumped. V.G. complete dust jacket, protected in a clear Brodart cover. One small area of water (?) staining at the top of the d.j. spine which corresponds to the mark on the book. A small chip in the same area and a few tiny chips at the base of the spine. Spine slightly faded. Overall a very attractive copy indeed , uncommon in the complete dust jacket. Note: [Francis Clement Crosslé was a surgeon, gynaecologist and writer who was involved with the early days of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and a friend of W.B.Yeats , Oliver St.John Gogarty, and later of D.H.Lawrence and the Australian artist Norman Lindsay. He emigrated to new South Wales in WW1 and besides running a busy medical practice was at the centre of artistic and cultural life there, becoming known as the "Doctor to the Artists".]
