Flush-cut quarter cloth and colour-pictorial papered boards slightly rubbed at the extremities; top corners slightly bumped; rear board slightly marked; front hinge partially split but firm; contemporary juvenile ownership signature in pencil on the front flyleaf (with the number '57' added in ink); minimal signs of age and use; an excellent copy. The first Australian edition, 'Printed by Morris & Walker, Melbourne, for George Jaboor . Australasian Representative of Hamish Hamilton Ltd., London'. The first edition was published by Random House in New York in 1940; the first UK edition was published by Hamish Hamilton in London in 1941.

Description: Very good first Australian edition in a very good dust jacket with a square inch chip from the top of the front panel of the jacket. Australian Edition 1942 stated on copyright page and original price of 6s. net still on front flap of the jacket. Like the first American edition, this one has the bird depicted on the front of the jacket. After the first printings, all later printings did not show the bird on the illustration on the front of the jacket.
