This book was created to mark the two hundredth anniversary of Horatio Hornblower's birthday. This edition was number 54 of 350 copies produced. The book centres around three main short stories which were often dubbed as the 'missing' stories by fans: The Hand of Destiny (1940), Hornblower's Charitable Offering (1941), and Hornblower and His Majesty (1940). They were initially published as magazine articles between 1940-1941, but were never integrated into the long-form 'Hornblower' novels.

Description: First edition of this collection of three Hornblower stories never before published in book form. Octavo, original boards, cartographic endpapers. One of 25 numbered copies signed by Alexander Kent of an edition of 350 numbered copies. Additionally one of 15 copies with one of the co-sponsors' gilt names to the front panel. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Cecil Louis Troughton Smith, known by his pen name Cecil Scott "C. S." Forester, was an English novelist known for writing tales of naval warfare, such as the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic wars. The Hornblower novels A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours were jointly awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction in 1938. His other works include The African Queen (1935; turned into a 1951 film by John Huston) and The Good Shepherd (1955; turned into a 2020 film, Greyhound, adapted by and starring Tom Hanks).
