Description: "Library of Entertaining Miscellany" containing "Home and Social Philosophy - or, Chapters on Every-day Topics," complete in one volume. Volume II. The title page for "Library of Entertaining Miscellanies" has been sewn in at the front and is dated 1853 - complete in one volume. The title page for "Home and Social Philosophy" is dated 1852 - 1st and 2nd series, complete in one volume. First edition from G.P. Putnam's Popular Library. The book is a collection on essays from the publication "Household Words," edited by CHARLES DICKENS. Topics include Dreaming, The Atlantic Waves, The Magic Crystal, Sleep, The Chemistry of a Pint of Beer, The Wind and the Rain, Physiology of Intemperance, Ballooning, The Chemistry of a Candle, Tea, A Witch in the Nursery, Three 'Detective' Anecdotes.and much more. From the Preface: "This volume is the first of a classified reprint of Dickens's 'Household Words' Under the title of 'Home and Social Philosophy' it is proposed thus to preserve, in a portable and permanent shape, all those valuable, pithy and entertaining essays which relate to domestic and social economy, familiar illustrations of natural philosophy, and kindred topics." Condition: Pea-sized tear at the top of the spine; the cloth and gilt lettering on the spine has somewhat faded; sharp corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a partial crack at the front hinge 2" up from the bottom between the title page and end paper. The title page for "Library of Entertaining Miscellanies" has been sewn in at the front before the "Home and Social Philosophy" title page. Mild foxing of preliminary pages; nickel-sized stain spot at the outer edge of pages 24-29.the remaining pages are clean. Page 19 has "Part of it was forgotten" written neatly in pencil in old handwriting at the outer margin; old name written in pencil on the front end paper. There is an insignificant crack at the hinge between pages 24 and 25 (despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached).

Two separate title-pages, the first reading-"Library of Entertaining Miscellanies Vol. II [rule] Home Philosophy. Complete in one Volume. New York: G.P. Putnam and Company, 10 Park Place 1853. The second title reads-Home and Social Philosophy: or, Chapters on Every-Day Topics from "HouseHold Words", edited by Charles Dickens, [Putnam engraved vignette of globe] First and Second Series Complete in one Volume. New York: G.P. Putnam & Company, 10 Park Place, 1852. {264pgs.] [234pgs.] Each of these titles had been issued in wraps by Putnam in 1852 and are included in Podeschi under D14 and D15. This two volume compilation is not listed in the Gimbel Collection. Intricately gilt stamped spine sunned and lightened with age, with sunning also affecting 35mm of front board along outside joint. Gilt decoration and lettering still bright however, with title and author quite readable. Rear free end-paper creased and second of two rear blanks shows light damp-stain along lower edge. Interior clean and fresh with no soiling or foxing. Light wear to top of back-strip. An exceptionally clean copy of this very scarce early American printing of articles originally published in Dickens weekly periodical, including "Three 'Detective' Anecdotes." Near very good copy. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
