Description: First editions, 1769. Three Volume set. Contents generally nice and clean. Bound in contemporary full calf, two titling labels to each volume, raised bands. Front boards of volume one and three detached. Other spine edges heavily rubbed but still attached. Corners all rubbed down to the boards. The red titling labels for each volume are present but two of the green labels to number the volumes are heavily chipped, one almost all missing. Spines heavily rubbed at the top and bottom and some general rubbing and fraying. Leather boards darkened around edges with some marking and scuffing. Scarce first edition.

Institutional label to the tail of the spine of Volume II, fragments of label to the tail of the spine of Volume III, and evidence of a label being formerly adhered to the tail of the spine of Volume I. Some wear and loss to the spine labels. Tidemark to the head of the front board of Volume III. A little fading to the spines. Hinges are starting but firm. Bound without endpapers. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound, though Volume III is generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots, mostly to the first and last few pages, and the endpapers. Library stamps to the title pages and to a couple of pages throughout the text. First two leaves of the Index to Volume I are lifting. Title page and first page of dedication in Volume I are detached but present. Tidemark to the last few pages of Volume II. Half-title of Volume III is detaching. Good

Robertson became Royal Chaplain to George III (1761), Principal of the University of Edinburgh (1762), Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1763, and Historiographer Royal in 1764, reviving a role within the Royal household in Scotland that had been in abeyance from 1709 until 1763. He was also a member of The Poker Club. Former owner's armorial bookplate on each fep (Robert Rutherford), hinges professionally reinforced (in perhaps the 19th century), covers moderately worn, corners bumped, unmarked, tight and square. Harrison began the American Revolutionary War as a lieutenant in the 3rd Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army. In 1775 he became an aide-de-camp to General George Washington with the rank of lieutenant colonel. The next year he succeeded Joseph Reed as military secretary to Washington, and served in that role until 1781. Prior to the war Harrison was Washington's chief lawyer.

Description: 3 volume set, 10 3/4 inches tall. First edition, tall quarto, in full calf with 'Cambridge panel'. This is a magnificent binding with a great patina. It appears to have been carved from mahogany, with raised bands and twin beautifully tooled labels. A large gilt centre tools and gilt fillets decorate the panels. The boards have classic 'Cambridges panels', inked, plain and speckled with elaborate blind tooling. Speckled pick edges. A dozen or so leaves in the first volume have light creasing and superficial staining at the tips of the foredge, this doesn't affect the shape or get near the text. With the martial bookplate of Vane Londonderry, From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. This classic history covers the life of the Great Holy Roman Emperor 'with a View of the Progress of Society in Europe, From the Subversion of the Roman Empire, to the Beginning of the Sixteenth Century .
