Description: VG/NO DJ, HB, 4to., 535 pgs. + Index. More properly this is an odd volume of the two volume set covering the early history of New Spain, in the First Edition. By the 4th Edition of 1796 third and fourth volumes had appeared which brought the history, in the final volume to include the History of Virginia to 1688. This volume presents Books 5-8 from about 1518 to about 1774 in New Spain. Bound in the original brown calf with gilt titles to maroon and black Morocco labels. Front joint is cracked at top but still holding well. some surface cracking of the spine but this is not very obtrusive. Previous owner's signature to front free endpaper is dated 1799. Some sets of this history call for two maps to each volume but this copy may have originally been bound by its owner with all the maps to Vol. 1 as I cannot detect where they would have been placed in this volume. There is a single fold copper engraving of Mayan glyphs opposite p. 481. This is a nice looking copy in a mellowed origianl state.

Description: Two volumes, complete. Missing maps. Bookplate of the Countess of Albemarle at front paste down of each volume; "Countess of Albemarle B. S." penned at half title of the first volume, and at title page of the second. This could be the signature of Elizabeth Southwell Keppel, first wife of William Charles Keppel, fourth Earl of Albemarle; however, the bookplate may be hers or that of Charlotte Susannah Keppel, William's second wife, as each paste down also includes the signature of Lady Philippa Sidney, to whom Charlotte left some number of her possessions following her death in 1862 (The Illustrated London News, February 7, 1863). Brown leather with elaborate gilt tooling at spine, vining gilt borders tooled at front and back panels. Heavy shelf-wear, scuffed and scratched, with frayed corners and notable loss to spine tips, as well as a large chip from the leather of volume two just above the titles. Hinges cracked through with exposed thread binding. Threads appear strong; binding is intact through textblocks. Additional prior owner's name penciled unobtrusively at front paste down of both volumes, and moderate to heavy foxing throughout, but the interiors are else clean. Texts are otherwise unmarked. Due to the size and weight of this set, it may require additional postage to ship. Photographs available upon request.
