RARE FIRST EDITION OF A MAJOR WORK ON THE ANCIENTS AND INDIA. This was the last literary effort of the prolific Scottish historian, whom Gibbon referred to as a "master artist." He was an ordained minister in the Church of Scotland, and Principal of the University of Edinburgh. "The thirty years during which [he] presided over the University perhaps represent the highest point in its history." He was also Chaplain of Stirling Castle and one of the King's Chaplains in Scotland. He made significant contributions to the writing of Scottish history and the history of Spain and Spanish America and this final work on India and the ancients. His work presented here is an account of ancient India and its relations with the West, the book is suffused with Robertson’s characteristic 18th-century optimism, and concludes with the hope that his account "of the early and high civilisation of India, and of the wonderful progress of its inhabitants in elegant arts and useful science, may have some influence upon the behaviour of Europeans towards that people."
