Condition: Good

Description: This is a UK first edition hardcover set of both volumes of this title, published by A. Millar in the Strand (London) in 1759. The photos show the condition better than I can describe but overall I believe the books to be in Good condition for their age. VOLUME 1: The book has a straight spine with sharp, but scuffed, corners and firm but also scuffed spine ends. The page edges toned but the text block is clean with the odd inconsequential mark and tightly bound. When you open the book you'll see a stain that runs round the edges of the front end papers and boards, front and back, but curiously this doesn't bleed through to the rest of the book. There is an owner book plate affixed to the inside board and the title page confirms the first publication in 1759. It needs noted the book was reprinted the same year, but those edition state second edition on the title page beneath the volume number. As you can see, the copies I am selling do NOT have that, which indicates the first edition. The book has 437 pages and finishes with "This ends the first volume". VOLUME 2: This volume is more or less identical condition to volume 1. The book has a straight spine with sharp, but scuffed, corners and firm but also scuffed spine ends. The book has 260 pages with an additional 118 pages of index that covers both volumes and a 39 page "Critical dissertation concerning the murder of King Henry, and the genuineness of the Queen's letters to Bothwell." Additionally there is one page of "errata" with corrections to typos, etc, that appear in both volumes and one final index of 30 pages.
